IMPROVEMENT IN BED-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,269, dated July 25, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern Beit known that l, JOHN REARDON, of the city, county, and State oi' New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom Spring, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a front view of one of my improved springs. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ot' the same, taken through line c: cc, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.

The object of this invention is to furnish improved springs to support the ends ot' the slats ota hedbottom, which shall be simple in construction,'inexpensive in manufacture, convenient in use, neat in appearance, and not liable to get out ot' order, or to Wear or tear the mattress.
The invention consists ot' a bed-bottom spring formed of the rabbeted U-frame, the iianged cross-head, the guide-pin, and the spiral spring, constructed and arranged to operate in connection with each other, as
vupon theirinner sides to receive tlan ges formed upon the ends ot the cross-head B, which is made wide, and with upwardlyextending langes upon its inner side and ends, to form a seat for the end ofthe slat, so that the said slat cannot rub against the bedstead E or frame A as it works up and down. To the under side ofthe cross-head Bis attached a pin, C, which passes down throngha guide-hole in the bottom bar of the frame A, a-nd around which is coiled a spiral spring, D. The lower 'end of the spiral spring D rests upon the bottom bar ofthe frame A, and upon its upper end rests the cross-head B. Upon the lower end of the guide-pin C is formed ahead, which is provided with a Washer of cloth, rubber, or other yielding material, to prevent noise when the said head comes in contact with the frame A. As manyof the springs A B G D are attached to each side rail of the bedstead as there are slats.
With this construction the bedstead can be put up, taken down, and carried from place to place with as much ease as it the slats rested upon cleats; and the various parts oi' the spring are so arranged that they7 cannot cut or injure the mattress.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bed-bottom springformed ofthe rabbeted U-f'rame A, the ilanged cross-head B, the
guide-pin C, and the spiral spring D, coilstructed and arranged to operate in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.,
