IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACC-O-PIPE MOUNTINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,245, dated July 25, 1876 application tiled A, June 15, 1876.

To all lwhom it lmay concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. LANG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipe D/Iountings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g, in which- Figure l represents my improved pipemounting applied to a pipe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the mounting.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

Heretofore pipe-mountings have commonly been made of two separate parts-namely, the bit, or mouth-piece, and the ferrule, the latter being arranged at one end to t upon the stem 0r neck of a pipe, while its other end received the end of the bit by means ofa screwble to get out of order from the shrinking of the bit or from the expansion of the ferrule, so that the joint which connects them becomes loose, and the metal ferrule is liable to become tarnished and present an unsightly appear- Besides these inconveniences, the ordinary mountings have not been capable of being applied indifferently to pipes, whether their stems were perfectly round or oval, the mounting being necessarily made either round or oval, so as to suit each particular shape of stem.

My invention obviates these objections and disadvantages.

lt consists in a pipe-mounting composed of india-rubber, or other elastic material, made in one piece throughout, and so that it will yield and adapt itself to any form of stem, round or oval, and formtherewith an air-tight joint. The mouth of the mounting, which receives the stem or neck of the pipe, is provided with a bead to strengthen its rim and prevent the socket part from being split when These mountings are lia- .the socket O, and which is of tapering form,

enlarging toward its mouth. The interior of the-socket is made with a shoulder, D, which surrounds the oriiice E ofthe part constituting the mouth-piece, and the mouth of the socket is provided with a bead, F, to strengthen the rim and prevent it from splitting when forced on a pipe-stern or neck of -a pipe.

By making my improved pipe-mounting of one piece, the article is improved in appearance, as well as in value, without increasing the cost, and by making it of a material and character that will yield and adapt itself to various forms of stems it' is simplified and made more convenient and useful than pipemountings heretofore known.

My mounting may be either of a curved or straight form.

What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The pipemounting' A, provided with an elastic socket and with a strengthening-bead, said elastic socket being made in one piece with the bit, or mouth-piece, substantially as herein shown and described.
