Description
E. N. MILLER April 114', 1931.
TIE
Filed Feb. 12, 1929 17. M Miller walls or hoards of a mold out to place.
Patented Apr. 14, 1931 UNITED STATES ELIAS N. MILLER, OF LQS ANGELES,
Application filed February 12, 1929. Serial in. 339,438., 1
This invention relates to ties and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be employed with advantage to maintain the forms of a mold effectively in desired assembly. It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which, when ,in applied or working position, serves effectually to maintain the side walls or boards of a .1 mold against spreading when concrete or the like is poured within the mold, and Which is constructed in a manner whereby the tie may readily overcome variations in thickness of the boards or side walls of the mold, the thickness of the wall or the like to be molded, or
other unevenness.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tie of this kind having means whereby the tie when applied serves to hold the side The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tie whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section illustrating a tie constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied or working position;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in plan of a tie constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention unapplied and in initial form.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved tie is formed from a single length or strand of wire of requisite gauge and comprises a central or intermediate length 1 having its opposite end portions reversely returnedrto provide the lengths 2 and 3, each of which having its free extremity terminating in. a laterallydisposed extension con'stitutinganabutment for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to. Theseextensions or abutments 4 each terminates inwardly of the adjacent end of the intermediate length 1 and the portionsof the lengths 1, Q and 3 between the extensions orabutments 4 are coiled or wrapped one aroundthe others wherebythe central majorportionof the tie possesses considerable strength and is substantially free from bending. r The connected end. portions of the lengths 1 and 2 and 1 and 3 outwardly of the extensions or'abutments 4 are separated to provide the loops 5 and 6 which are adapted to beengaged around the'external uprights or rods 7 comprised in a form for concrete or the like. with the as bridging the space between the front and back walls 8 of the form.
As herein disclosed, the loop 5 is of-considerable length so that in applying the tie the outer portion of the side strands 5a of the loop 5 may be twisted one about the other through the medium of a suitable instrument, thus compensating for any variation in the thickness of the mold walls, thickness of the wall or the like to be molded, or any other unevenness. This twisting of the strands 5a of the loop 5 also takes care of a battered wall where there is say a batter of one inch in ten feet. This long loop 5 in practice materially increases the amount of work a man can accomplish with ties in a given time and also assures a flexibility to the tie which is often most convenient to have. It is also to be understood that when the tie is in applied or working position the extensions or abutments 4 will have contact with the opposed faces of the walls of the mold and thereby assuring said walls being maintained in proper separation.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a tie constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except --as-hereinafter claimed.
1. A tie for plastic forms comprising a length of wire having the opposite ends. thereof reverted and twisted about each other, whereby to produce a central body ortion, a substantially small loop extending outwardly of one end of: said body, and an elongated enlarged: loop extending outwardly of the opposite end of said body, said elongated loop when in operative position being adapted to extend outwardly of the form whereby to permit tensioning of the tie.
2. A tie for plastic forms comprising a length of wire having the opposite ends thereof reverted and twisted about each other whereby to form a central elongated body structure, the opposite end portions of said body being extended outwardly, whereby to form loops, one of said loops being elongated and having the side portions thereof positioned in substantially parallel relation to each other to permit twisting thereof about the plastic form.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature. 7
