IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENT/AL CHAINS..

Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent N0. 180,078, dated July 18, 1876; application filed July 30, 1874.

To all whom it may concergi:

Be it known that I, GREGOR TRINKs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new-and useful Improvenient in the -lVlanufacture of Ornamental Chains, of which the following is a specilication:

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 represents a plan of a wire from which the chain-links are stamped. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view ofthe chain in its progress of being manufactured. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same.

This invention consists in a chain composed of links, which are stamped out of a liattened piece of wire, and then connected by passing` each link (except the first two) through the loops of two preceding links, and then opening said links by means of a suitable tool inV such a manner that a strong and durable ornamental chain is produced of a series of closedlinks without the use of solder.

In carrying out my invention l take a piece of wire, A, and pass the saine through a pair of rolls, 4so thatit becomes flattened, as shown in Fig. 2. Out of this wire l stamp the links a, as indicated in Fig. l, and these links I double up and pass them each (with the exception of the lirst two) through the loops of two preceding links, said loops being opened by means of a suitable, tool after the link has been passed through the preceding links.

.In making my closed links l atten wire, such as shown in Figs. l and 2, because in stamping the links from such flattened Wire i the outside edges of each link remain rounded,

retaining the shape of the edges of the flattened wire,- While the inside edges of each link become partially rounded by the action of the cutting-dies, and When the chain is completed it has the appearance ot' a chain made of wire links, the ends of which are soldered together.

By my invention, in either case. an ornamental chain is produced of closedlinks without the use of solder, and since my links become absolutely uniform in size and shape, the appearance of my chain is superior t-o that of similar chains produced from w-ire links which are closed by means'ot' solder; and, furthermore, considerable time and'labor are saved, since by my method a very large lininber of closed links can be produced in a cornparatively short time.

I am aware that links for ornamental chains have been stamped out ofsheet metal and con nected in the same manner in which my links are connected. Such links necessarily have square edges, and a chain formed from the same has au appearance different from the chain iormed'froin my links.

What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A'n ornamental chain, the links a of which are formed of round wire with flattened sides and convex edges, and connected substantiah ly in the manner shown and described.
