specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ls0,o72,atted July i8, 187e; application inea January 8, 1576.
T0 alla/tom Iit may concern Be it known thatI, CHARLE'sT. SEGAR, of Utica. inthe county ot' Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms;
a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation ot' the saine, ret'erence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and tigures of reference marked thereon. n
Figure 1 of the drawings isa representation ot' a plan view of my springbed-bottom, and Fig. 2 isa longitudinal vert-ical sectional View ofthe same.4 Fig. 3 is a perspective bottom frame, with one ol' the springs provided with a cushion-rod.
'lhis invention has vrelation t improvements in spring bed-bottoms; and it consists in the arrangement and novel construction ot the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letterAdesignates the bottom frame ot' my improved spring-bed, composed ot' spaced longitudinal wooden strips a, connected and braced by transversewooden strips b. Thisfralne is ot'a length and breadth proportionate to the size ot' the bed. Upon these strips arearranged spaced secured to stri-ps a by means ot' staples c, which are driven into strips a, so as to inclndethe lower portion ot' the said. springs Aand I therefore lay no and a rod, d, which extends diametrically across the lower spiralof the said springs, as shownin liigs. 2 and 3, for the purpose ot' attording the necessary solidity and durability of their attachment, the rod l extending diametricallylacross the lower helix'ot the spring, and acting as a cushion between the lower end ot' the spring and the supporting-strip a. The upper ends ot' these springs are 'secured by means ot' stopples o to rectangular plates ot' wood, C, which, being designed' to afford broad bearings t'or springs B, are necessarily in the same relation to each other as are the said springs. f
I ani aware that it is not new, broadly, to rest spiral springs on slats in a lower ,frame yot' a bed-bottom, each spring having on its .top a square,'ll`at block, the blocks being tied together by rattan strips, as shown in Letters Patent dated-September 30,1873, No. 143,373,
claim tofsu-ch invention.
What I claim as new, and desirev to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In' a bed-bottom, the combination, with the strip a, ot' the spiral spring B, staples c, and
yrod d, substantially as described, and for the purpose set torth. l
.In testimony that I claim the above I have hereuntosnbscribed my naine in the presence ot two witnesses.
