Patented Apr. 14, 1931 UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE EDWIN J'. DOWNING, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO GARDNER-DENVER COM- PANY, OF DENVER, COLORADO, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE Toor; RETAINER Application led December 31, 1928. Serial No. 329,644.
The object .of the present invention is to provide a tool retainer in which the tool-engaging member or yoke is more securely held against any tendency to open under the strain of blows delivered to it by the tool that is retained thereby, the means that yieldingly resists the movement of the yoke. moreover having merely a rectilinear movement as distinguished :from a swinging or klateral movement.
In the accompanying drawings there is disclosed the preferred embodiment of the invention and therein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the chuck end of is a rock drill with the retainer in place.
^ fio housing.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on theline 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevation. Y Figure 4 is a perspective view of the chuck Figure 5 isa perspective view of the retaining yoke. Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 ofFigure 1.
i The drilllst'ructure, itwill berunderstood,
may be of any desired type Aand includes a chuck end 7 with a chuck 8 therein to receive the shank 9 of a drill steel or other tool. This shank has the usual enlargement shown in f o the form of a collar 10. Thetool, it will be -v spaced longitudinally disposed ears 13 anda central elongated portion 14 located between the ears 13 and provided with a longitudinal slot 15. This slot opens into a longitudinal chamber 16 that opens through the front end 1- 5 of the enlargement.
A blow-resisting stirrup of substantially U-shape is mounted on the housing. It consists of side arms or bars 17 slidable in the ears 13 and having annular stop flanges 18 w that limit their rearward movement. On the rear end'portions of the side arms are relatively heavy coiled springs 19 that bear against the rear ends of the ears and against nuts'20 located on and suitably locked to the rear terminals of the side arms. The front ends of said side arms are connected by a cross bar 21 preferably integral with the side arms. It will be noted by reference to Figures 2 and 3 that the cross bar 21 is located at one side of the shank 9 of the tool and is suiiiciently spaced .therefrom to at all times permit the passage of the collar past the same,
so that in itself this stirrup does not inter fere with the introduction and removal of the tool from the chuck.
The retaining member is in the form of a yoke 22 carried by a' rearwardly extending arm 23vthat swings in the slot 15 and has at 1 its rear end an integral cross pin 24 constitutivot that is located in the chamber T e yoke 22 is adapted to embrace the shank of the tool as shown in Figure 3, but the space within it is insuihcient to permit the passage of the collar 10. V(lonsequently when in the position shown in Figures 2 and 3 this yoke, while permitting a limited movement of the steel, is in the path of the collar and therefore prevents the detachment of the steel from the chuck. The upper portion of the yoke is in the form of a relatively heavy body 25, and said body and yoke proper slide ing a 'transversely of and against the rear side of ,the cross bar 21 of the stirrup. The front face of said yoke and body are provided with recessed seats 26 and 27, in which the cross bar 21 is `adapted to engage when the yoke is in its operative and when it is in its inoperative position. The bearing of the yoke against the cross bar is cured by means of a coiled spring 28 located in the rear end of lthe chamber 16 and bearing against a washer 29 that inturn has a recess 30. Its front side constitutes a pivotal bearing for the cross pin 24 of the arm 23 of the yoke. The spring 28, it will be noted is very much lighter than the springs 19 of the stirrup. The arm 23 preferably has an outstanding finger piece 31 by means of which the yoke can be readily swung.
With this construction, it will be noted that the yoke 22 can be swung transversely of the chuck and tool shank and to and from a position in the path of the collar of said shank.` l/Vhen moved to either position the cross-bar 21 of the stirrupV engages in ene Vof the seats 26-27 yand thus ih o'lds the yokeV in its active or inactive position. By forcing the yoke transversely the cross bar Qlcan be unseated as the vspring 28 will yieldy and permit the rearward movement of the yoke. The stirrups 17-21, however', has no lateral movement and consequently when the yoke is in its active position, as shown in Figures 2' be apparent to those skilled inthe art Without further description, and it will be Vunderstood that various :changes in the size, shape,
proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing .any 0f ,the ldvltages 'of the invention; What I claim, is:
