. M-Acmnnr'on EMBOSSING CURTAIN-POLE RINGS I Application filed June 17,
This invention relatesto improvements in machines for'i'mpa'rting ornamentation to the surfaces of cnrtainpole rings and particu larly to the conventional ring out from wood.
.In the instant case, the machine is designed and constructed to effect the surface ornamentation Of; Wood rings by means of a branding roll but we desire it to bennderstood that for surface ornamentation of rings composed of metal or of material which permitsof easy impression without. the use of heat, the heating means shown'may be'omitted.-
' The main objectof the present invention is to provide a verysimple and efficient ma chine for the purpose spe'cifiedwherein the active elements aremoved to exert pressure on the ring to be ornamented by means of compressed airwhich pe'rmits'of great variations in the degree of pressure exerted on the ring and alsopermits of'easy control of the operation 'of'the machine; I 1 A further object of'theinvention'is to pro vide a rotatable carrier for the rings which is moved by airpressure to compress, the latter against the ornamenting rolljand by aspring to normal position and wherein the said spring and air-pressure. means also control and actuate a, guidefor preventing canting of the rings whileundergoing ornamentad Other 1 objects" ofthej invention 1' will 'be pointed out or. understood from the following specification. .i r V In the accompanying drawings illustrating a, suitable embodiment of the machine:'
7 Fig. l is a perspective view of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention for imparting surface ornamentation to rings.
Fig. 2 is a frontelevation of the same.
Fig-3 is a plan section of. the same on the line 38 ofFig. 2. I
4 is. a vertical section theline 441- of Fig.2.
Fig. 5v is a detail vertical section of the same on the line 5 -5 of Fig. 3. Y 1 l Fig.6 is a fragmentary detail sectional view showing the 'ringcarrier and impressof the same on 1929. Serial no. 371,432.
ing-rollsand a ring interposed between said ro ls. f p I The frame .of the machine includes the table plate 1 on which two bearing supporting standards 2 and 3 are mounted. The bear.- ngs 4 and 5 carried by said standards 2 and 3 receive the end .portions of a shaft 6 which" is .annularly] enlarged between said bearings & and 5' to provide thrust shoulders for engaging the opposed'ends of said bearings The shaft 6 is equipped with a sprocket wheel, 7 at one end over which the sprocket chain 8 is trained forfassociating the same with a companionsprocket wheel 9 on a shaft 10 which is suitably geared to a source of power such as the electriomotor 11 shown. In the instance illustrated," the shaft 10 is journalled in hearings in a gear-box lQ and carries a worm-wheel 13 meshing with a worm on the motor shaft 14.
At its other end portion the shaft 6 is equipped with a spur-gear 15 having long teeth, for reasons hereinafterset forth, and outwardly of said pinion,'said shaft 6 is equipped with an annularly grooved roll 16. The surface of saidgroove in the roll 16 is provided, in the instance illustrated, with projecting ornamenting formations which, for example, are adapted to produce impressions in the surface of a ring simulating those of hammered metal. Obviously the, surface of said groove of said roll 16 maybe formed toproduce either depressed or raised ornamentations on the ring surface as. desired.
Mounted on opposite sides ofthe roll16 and suitably supported and held against rotation, are gas-burners 17 having annular rows of gas discharge perforations opposing the side faces of the roll 16 for causing gas jetsto impinge upon and maintain said roll: hot. These burners 17 are connected by means of'a supply pipe 18 with sources of air and gas under pressure and delivering mixed airand gas to said burners 17. This supply pipe 18 is equipped with a valve 19 while the air supply pipe 20 and the gas supply pipe 21 are equipped with valves 22 and 23 re spectively.
The burners 17 are supported by a bracket jecting through an opening 30 in said plate;
V The cylinder 29 is equipped in its lower face or end with a head 31 having a central bore with which'a tube 32 connects, said tube constituting an air supply and discharge chamber and being sealed at itslower end by means of the head or cap 33. Between its v ends the said tube or air chamber 32 is connected with an air supply and discharge tube 34. The cylinder 29 is likewise connected at its'upper end with an air supply and dis charge tube 35. 'B'oth these tubes are connected at their other ends with the valve casing 36 which is suitably connected with a source of supply of compressed air and is equipped with exhaust ports. A' valve in said casing equipped with the operating lever 37 is arranged so that, when disposed in one position, it seals the air exhaust port for and connects the air supply tube 34 -with the source of air under pressure, and when in, an-
other position, shuts off the last-mentioned communication, opens the discharge port for and connects the tube 35 wit-hthe source of air under-pressure. v v
7 The piston 28 of thecylinde-r is moved to and held at the lower limit of its movement the lowerlim'it of its movement.
by means of the air under pressure supplied, thro-ughthe tube 35,] and is'forced upwardly by air-under pressure supplied to the chamber 32' through the tube 34, details of c011 struction of the valve and casing 36 being omitted. from illustration as well-known in. the steam and gas-fitting arts. A spring 38 is attached at its lower end to the frame element 39 and at its other'end to a:
pair of arms 40 which are parallel and pivoted at one end tothe block 41 on the table 1 andbetween their ends bear upon an arm 42 rigidly secured to: the vertically reciprocable bearing 26 t0 normallymaintain the latter at The outer free end portions ofthearms 40ers so disposed that the openspac'e between them lies normally below the carryingroll'43 mounted upon oneiend portion of the shaft 33 jour-- nalled in the. sleeve-bearing 26.. Said roll 43 is provided with an; annular groove in which rings 45. to be subjected to the action of the roll 16are engaged, the carrying roli'being; of less outer diameterthan'theopenings inthe rings 45. I
The arms 40 are normally positioned to permit :the. placing of ari-ng on. the said carrying roll 43 and, as the said roll is raised under the influence of compressed air admitted to the cylinder 29 below the piston thereof and causing the latter and the bearing 26 to rise, the said arms 40 swing upwardly so that the space between their free end portions receives the. lower portion of the ring 45 carried by'the roll 43 to prevent said ring from canting out of a vertical plane.
The shaft 44 is equippedwith a long tooth spur-pinion which meshes at all times with the companion gear 15 on the shaft 6, said long teeth permittingzsnfiicient separation of the rolls 16 and43 to mount upon and remove rings from the roll 43. Said rolls rotate continuously in'unison, and, when a ring 45.v isinterpo'sedtherebetween and conipressedair is admitted to the cylinder as above described, said ring 45 will be compressed against the ornamenting surface. formations of the groove of the roll 16 and will be rotated to have the ornamentation imparted to its outer surface'under the influence of heat and pressure, in the instant case.
In operation, a single operator feeds and removes rings successively with one hand and operates the valve lever with the other hand to introduce compressed air into the cylinder following the mounting of each ring on the roll 43 and to exhaust the air from the cylinder preparatory to removing the ring from said roll.
I claim as myinvent'ion: V 1. A machine'offthe kindspecified includ: ing a carrier roll and an embossing roll geared for rotation in unison in opposite directions, said rolls being separable to permit insertion and removal of an element to be embossed, and manually controlled fluid pressure actuated mechanism associated with. one of said rolls for forcing the same toward the. other and maintain the said element compressed against said embossing roll; 2..
