' MACHINE FOR SHADING THE SURFACES OF CALICO-PRINTING ROLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,540, dated July 5, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HANoocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Shading the Surfaces of Calico- Printing Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore the shading-mill in machines for producing the shading-ground upon the surface of calico-printing rolls has been itself engraved with the entire shading efiect which is to be impressed upon the surface of the printing-roll, thus requiring a separately-engraved mill to produce each of the various effects desired; and it is the object of my invention to shade the printing-roll without first providing a shaded mill which is the counterpart of the desired shade upon the roll; and my invention consists in the combination, with means for rotating the printingroll, of the shadingmill adapted to press against the surface of the roll, and means for varying the depth of the action of the mill, whereby the desired shading effect may be produced upon the surface of the roll by means of a mill having its surface engraved with a single uniform shading-ground, the desired variable effect being produced upon the roll by the repeated rise and fall of the' mill when held against the surface of the roll, a single shading-mill being thus made capable of producing a great variety of shading effects.
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of my improved shadingmachine. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation, Fig. 4 represents the opposite end elevation. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views showing the construction of parts for the machine. Fig. 7 represents a vertical section taken in the line 7 7 of Fig. 4,-showing an edge view of the shading-mill.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the machine,B the copper printing-roll to be shaded, and Q the shadingmill. The roll B is supported upon the shaft D, which is journaled in the bearings E E, and is rotated by means of the gear F, secured to the shaftD and engaging with the drivingpinion G upon the inner end of the cone-pulley H, which turns loosely upon a fixed stud 1. Upon the bed J of the frame is placed the carriage K, which is held to slide upon the parallel ways a a, and to the carriage K is pivoted the lever L by means of the pin 1), the outer arm of the said leverbeing provided with the notches c c for holding the weight M and with a vertical slot adapted toreceive the connecting-bar N, and also with the lateral perforation (Z for receiving the bolt e, which serves to connect the bar N with the lever L, the said barN being provided with several perforations f, whereby the shadingmill Q may be adjusted in height to operate upon printing-rolls of diiferent diameters.
The carriage K is provided with the upright standard 0, to the upper end of which is pivoted the lever P, and to the outer end of the lever P is jointed the connecting-bar N by means of the pivot-pin g. Between the ears h h, at the under side of the lever P, is placed the hardened-steel shading-mill Q, having a'properly-engraved surfacet' for impressing the shading-surface upon the printingroll B, the said mill being arranged to turn loosely upon the pinj, which passes through the cars h h. The carriage K is driven along the ways a a of the bed J by means of the screw R, which engages with a nut S, held by the downwardly-extending arm of the carriage, and the said screw is rotated from the shaft D by means of the pinion T upon the shaft D, which engages with the gear U upon the screw. Upon the shaft V, which is supported in the bearings H, is placed the gear W, which is connected with the gear F upon the shaft D by means of the intermediate gear X, which turns loosely upon an adjustable stud m, the said shaft V being provided with the spline n and the sliding gear Y, which is adapted to move back and forth with the carriage K, and at the same timerotate with the shaft V, the said gear Y being suitably held in a notch q, made in the said carriage and engaging with the gear Z upon a shaft A, which is held in the bearings 0 0 at the lower end of the downwardly-projecting arms 10 p of the carriage K, and upon the shaft A, between the bearings 0 o, is placed the pattern-cam B, which may be of any required contour to produce the desired shading effect upon the surface of the roll B by causing the proper rise and fall of the shadingmill Q.
When the machine is set in operation, the roll B will be caused to rotate under the shading-mill Q, which Will be pressed down upon the said roll by means of the Weight M, and the up-and-down movement of the shadingroller will be caused by the action of the cam B upon the end 7" of the lever L, and this operation of the cam will be continuously repeated while the shading-mill Q is traversing the length of the printing-roll B.
The gear W may be changed for others of different sizes, so as to drive the pattern-cam B at any number of revolutions desired.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a machine for shading the surface of calico-printing rolls, the combination, with means for rotating the printing-roll, of. the sliding carriage, the shading-mill supported upon the sliding carriage and adapted to press against the surface of the roll, means for causing the traversing movement of the carriage, and the cam for raising and lowering the mill to produce the shading effect, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for shading the surface of calico-printing rolls, the combination, With the roll-supporting mandrel D and means for rotating the same, of the sliding carriage K, the screw R and nut S for causing the traverse of the carriage, the shading-mill Q, the lever P, carrying the shading mill, the Weighted lever L, connected with the lever P, the pattern-cam B, adapted to actuate the lever P, and the connecting-gears for operating the cam, substantially as described.
