Description

Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES MAKAHIWA x. LUA, or HONOLULU,- rnnmronx or HAWAII PIN FASTENING Application filed January 31, 1930. Serial No. 424,980.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety or looking catches for jewelry, insignia and the like.
An object of the invention contemplates the provision and arrangement of a locking device of this character designed for engagement with the attaching portion of the form of jewelry or insignia.
An additional obj eot of the invention con- 19 sists in the arrangement of guide portions upon the attaching portions of the jewelry or insignia by meansof which the locking element can be easily, efiectively and expeditiously applied.
More specifically stated the locking element is provided with a flexible form of connection with the article of jewelry or insignia to prevent its being lost when not in 1158. With the above and other objects in view,
the invention further consists of the followin novel features and details of constructlon, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing 2- Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of the conventional four-in-hand tie or cravat showing a stick-pin applied in the knot'therefor and exhibiting only that part of the stick-pin carrying the form of ornamentation. 7
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the present invention with the locking element suspended therefrom.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional viewtaken through a portion of the attaching shank of the article of jewelry with the locking element applied.
Fi re 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the attaching shank with the locking element in use.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the locking element per se.
Figures 7 and 8 are end elevationsrof the locking element. 7
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote correspondlng parts, the reference character 10 lndlcates generally the attaching shank of an article of jewelry, insignia and the like which is provided with a pointed or penetrat- .ing extremity 11 upon one end thereof. 'The shank being also bent upon itself or otherwlse offset, as at 12, upon its uppermost end .to facilitate the mounting and securing of a plate 13 having its exposed face covered or treated with means of ornamental character.
The above construction is old and usual in stick or tie pin construction and forms no part of the present application for Letters Patent but is merely mentioned for purposes of illustration in bringing forward the novel advantages of the present invention.
The invention primarily resides inthe arrangement'of an ear 14' carried by and clepending from the offset or shoulder portion 12 upon the uppermost end of the shank 10 and immediately behind the plate 13. A chain orother flexible form of connection, such as indicated at 15, is joined at its uppermost end with the ear 14 incident to the passing of a connecting link' 16 through the aperture therein. The shank proper is provided with longitudinally extending cross sectional v-shaped grooves or recesses 17 upon diametrically opposite sides thereof and horizontally drilled at intervals thereon ,to provide passageways' 18. These passageways are preferably located at the intersections of the oppositely and obliquely inclined side walls of the grooves or recesses 17, in the manner suggested in Figure 5 of the drawing.
The locking element, alluded to in the foregoing, comprises a plate member 19 having a length of felt or packing, such as indicated at 20, upon the under face thereof designed for contacting engagement with the adjacent surface portion of the shank 10 right angularly disposed to each of the recesses 17 and in parallelism with the passageways 18. Spring elements, such as indicated at 21, carried at intervals upon the under face of the plate member 19 and curved upon themselves in the manner shown in Figures 2, 5 and 6 of the drawing exert constant downward tension with the penetrating elements 22 carried upon the opposite ends thereof. These penetrating elements are designed for insertion within the passageways 18 and for subsequent locking engagement within the hooked eXtremities 23 of arms 24 disposed at intervals upon the opposite end of the plate member 19 and upon the under face thereof.
Although I have shown and described my invention as being designed for application upon the attaching shanks of stick or scarf pins, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to this particular application inasmuch as the locking device may be equally and effectually as well applied upon the attaching shanks of badges, emblems, and other forms of insignia.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is here in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination of a pin having passageways in the attaching shank therefor, said shank being recessed longitudinally thereof and extending for appreciable distances beyond the passageways therein, said recesses being of V-shape in cross section, and of a locking element having arms guided terminally thereof upon the inclined side walls of the recesses toward the passageways for projection therethrough.
2. The combination of a pin having passageways in the attaching shank therefor, said shank being recessed longitudinally thereof and extending for appreciable distances beyond the passageways therein, said recesses being of V-shape in cross section, of a locking element having arms guided terminally thereof upon the inclined side walls of the recesses toward the passageways for projection therethrough, and retaining elements upon the locking element for the projecting extremities of said arms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
