UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR J. SMITH, OF TAPPAN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES F. DOOLAN MANU- FACTURING CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TIE CLASP.
Application filed April 28, 1926. Serial No. 105,216.
This invention relates to necktie clasps such as are used for holding the ends of fourin-hand neckties from flying about and which are also used for attaching the ends of the tie to a shirt front so as to prevent the tie from slipping up on the collar in front.
More particularly the invention relates to a necktie clasp formed from a single strip of sheet metal cut and bent to a novel form,
' the invention residing both in the blank and in the formed article.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved sheet metal necktie clasp made from a blank of improved form bent in a novel manner.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure l is a: face View of the clasp.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure at is a. plan view of the blank from which the clasp is made.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a blank of sheet metal of uniform thickness throughout. This blank has a central portion or shank 10 slightly tapered from end to end and at the smaller end the blank is provided with a substantially oval enlargement 11, the blunter end of the oval being more remote from the shank and the smaller end of the oval having its sides curved gently to fair into the side edges of the shank. This end is cut out in the center to .provide an eye 12. At the larger end of the shank there is provided a similar but much larger enlargement 13 having a large eye let punched therein thus forming a loop several times the width of the shank 10.
In forming the clasp from this blank the shank is doubled on itself at a point about one-fourth its length from its wider end and forms a reversely curved bend 15, the Wider end of the shank being inclined toward the narrower end so that the large loop straddles the shank being curved upwardly at its large end and having its sides curved downwardly as at 16 to lie in the plane of the longer part of the doubled shank.
In use the tie clasp is simply slipped over those portions of the necktie or tie and shirt it is desired to clasp together, the upturned end of the large loop aiding in facilitating this operation.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
A neck tie clasp formed from a blank for tie clasps formed from a strip of sheet metal and having a narrow shank portion and an enlargement at each end, one of said enlargements being of several times the width of the shank and being of substantially oval form, the last mentioned enlargement bell-is punched out in the center to form a loop, said shank being doubled on itself with the shorter end inclined toward the longer end of the shank, the loop having its sides bent downwardly and its free end bent upwardly, the downwardly bent portions of the loop sides normally having their upper and lower surfaces in the respective planes of the upper and lower surfaces of the shank and the lower surface of the loop end normally contacting with the upper surface of said shank.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ARTHUR J. SMITH.
