The invention relates to battery boxes or containers of themolded composition type such as hard rubber or asphaltic compounds in which the battery cells are formed by integral partitions.
The invention aims to provide handle means for such containers which may be easily applied and removed, which when in position will be of ample strength to withhold the lifting and hold down stress andin which the handle means will be capable ofeconomical manufacture, and the method of connection will be such as to add nothingto the cost of the container over those customarily in use.
With these several objects in view the in vention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, the nature and scope of the invention being defined by the claims appended hereto.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

At the corners of the container the ends of these groove entering portions are bent back at right angles to form side arms 20 embracing the sides of the container or box.
The ends of these arms are detachably pivoted to the side of the containeigthe axis of the pivots being parallel to the portions 2?).
A convenient form of detachable pivot may comprise cylindrical metal studs 3 secured to the side walls by screws 3a tapped into reinforcinginserts embedded in the walls of the box.
As an alternative the ends of the arms may be bent inward at right angles as indicated at 2:2 to engage recesses 1a: formed in the sides of the box as shown in Fig. 4.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination in a battery container havingside and end walls (enlargements on the end walls adjacent the top thereof, there being on each end wall an enlargement forming an upwardly facing shoulder and a pair of abutment enlargements above said shoul der and spaced apart therefrom to form a groove, and from each other to form a space communicating with said groove, and a bail or handle 7 member having an upstanding handle loop adapted to be disposed in said space between said abutments, said bail having portions extending laterally from said loop and lying in said groove, and having angularly turned hooked ends adapted to embrace the side walls of the container and pivot means on the side walls of the container adapted to be detachably engaged by the hooked ends of the said bail. 7

A container and handle according to claim 1 in which the said abutments are provided with inclined cam surfaces at their upper ends to producea cam action on the groove engaging portions ofthe bail whereby the latter are pressed outward without spreading of the hooked ends, when the handle is swung down from an inclined position about its pivots to horizontal engaged position.
3. In combination, a container having upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means thereon, a handle having a portion interposed between said upwardly and down wardly facing shoulder means and held against upward and downward displacement thereby, a bight in said handle, and shoulder means on the container and engaging the sides of the bight for preventing spreading of the handle. In combination, a container having up wardly and downwardly facing shoulder means thereon, a handle interfitting with said upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means and held against upward and downward displacement thereby, retention means on the sides of the container, said handle having side portions embracing the sides of the container an'dengaged with said retention means, a bightin said handle and shoulder means on the container and engaging the sides of the bight for preventing spreading of the handle. a
5. In combination, a container having upward, also vertical and downward facing 'abutments, and metal handle means adapted to lie between said upward and downward facing abutments and "between said vertical abutments and be held against upward, clownward and sidewise movement thereby.
' 6. In combination, a container having side and end walls, upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means on said end walls, a
handle having a portion interposed between said upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means and held against upward and downward displacement thereby, a bight in said handle, and shoulder means on the container and engaging-the sides of the bight for preventing spreading ofthe handle.
7. In combination, a container having side and end walls, upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means on said end walls, a handle lnterfittlng w1th'sa1d upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means and held against upward and downward displacement thereby, retention means on the sides of the container, said handle having side portions embracing the sides of the container and engaged with said'retention means, a bight in said handle and shoulder means or the con tainer and engaging the sides of the bight for preventing spreading of the handle.
8. In combination, a container havingside and end walls, upward, also vertical and downward facing abutments, on said end walls, andmetal handle means adapted to lie between said upward and downward facing abutments and against said vertical abutments and be held against upward, downward and sidewise movement thereby.
9. Apparatus according to claim 7 in which said downwardly facing shoulder means are provided with inclined cam surfaces at their upper'ends to produce a cam action on the shoulder engaging portions of the han le whereby the latter are pressedoutward without spreading of the side portions when the handle is swung down from an inclined position about said retention. means as pivots, in applying the handle to the-container.

In combination, a container having side and end walls, upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means on said end walls only. a handle interfitting with said upwardly and downwardly facing shoulder means and held againstupward and downward displacement thereby. handle retention means on the sides of the container, said handle having sideportions embraci-ng'the sides of the container an d en aged with said retention means, a bightjn said handle and laterally facing shoulder means on the end walls of the container and engaging the sides of-thebight for preventin" spreading of the handle, said side walls being substantially plain to permit the sides of the handle to move freely and unobstructedly over the side walls of the container in applying the handle thereto. 1
