Description
March 31, 1931. w R|NAU 1,798,224
TRANS PORTABLE GRINDING MACHINE Filed May 3, 1929 Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES WILHELM RINAU, OF BREMEN, GERMANY TRANSPORTABLE GRINDING MACHINE Application filed May 3, 1929, Serial No. 360,153, and in Germany February 18, 1928.
Grinding machines, in which the common carrier for the grinding spindle and the motor are balanced by a heavy mass and ad justable in vertical direction, and in which the grinding spindle is oscillatable around horizontal and vertical axes in being simultaneously transportable and adapted to be adjusted in vertical direction, have become known. This invention has for its object to improve the applicability of such grinding machines and particularly to enlarge the radius of action of the grinding wheel without shifting of the transportable frame.
The usual construction of the grinding spindle presents the inconvenience of insecure guiding and considerable wear. The object of the invention, to enlarge the radius of action of the grinding wheels without shifting of the transportable frame, is atzo tained specially by a shifting of the grinding spindle in longitudinal direction with little expense of power and without submitting the elements to appreciable wear. According to the invention the grinding spindle, which in a manner known per se is rendered oscillatable by means of a universal joint, is oscillatably suspended on a bracket pivotally mounted at the side of the vertical guiding axle.
A further improvement consists in that on said vertical guiding axle a guiding sleeve is shiitably mounted adapted to be raised by a winch, the bearing bracket for the grinding spindle being pivotally mounted on a lateral arm of said guide sleeve.
According to the invention the bearing bracket for the grinding spindle oscillatably mounted by means of a universal joint is pivotally mounted on the side of the vertical guiding axle facing the grinding spindle, said bracket being further fitted with an arouate slot for the vertical grinding axle.
Various embodiments of the invention are possible, and one of these embodiments is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows the grinding machine in elevation, partly in section,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of Fig. 2, partly in section on line 11-11 of this figure.
On the vertical guiding axle a of the frame 2'), mounted on wheels, a bearing sleeve 0 is shiftably guided, which is adapted to be se cured in its adjusted position by means of a set screw cl. The bearing sleeve 0 carries a bracket 0 on one side of which a winch 7 adapted to be operated by a crank handle 9 is mounted. This winch f has ratchet teeth 2'. The rope h of the winch f is guided over a pulley 70 mounted on the top end of the axle a, and it is attached at Z to the bracket 6. The bearing sleeve 8 has a laterally projecting arm 0, on a bearing 0 of which a bearing bracket a is pivotally mounted by means of an axle m. An arm a of said bearing bracket, projecting on the other side of the axle a, serves as carrier for the grinding spindle 0 which is oscillatably mounted by means of a universal joint 19 in a manner known per se. The grinding spindle 0, which carries at its front end the grinding wheel q, may be directly driven from a motor 7- fixed on the machine. WVith this object in view the grinding spindle may be mounted in a special housing oscillatable by means of a universal joint. The arm n of the bearing bracket n has an arcuate slot 8 so that the bearing bracket n and with the same the grinding spindle 0 can 8 r be freely oscillated. By this construction is obtained that the grinding spindle 0 can be oscillated around the vertical bolt p and also around the horizontal bolt p of the universal oint.
The grinding spindle 0 can be further shifted in horizontal direction by oscillating around the bolt m, shifting of the frame I) being not necessary for this purpose.
The radius of action of the grinding wheel is thereby considerably enlarged.
The grinding spindle 0 can be easily moved in all directions in accordance with the shape of the blank to be treated and without much expense of power, when it is gripped in proximity of the grinding wheel.
For the arcuate slot 8 a slot open at one end can be substituted so that it is possible to oscillate the grinding spindle approximately 360.
I claim 1. A transportable grinding machine comprising, in combination, a vertical guiding axle, a grinding spindle, a bearing bracket tor said grinding spindle, a universal joint connecting the grinding spindle with the bearing bracket, a guide sleeve shiftably mounted on said guiding axle, a Winch on said guide sleeve on one side of said guiding axle, 10 an arm of said guide sleeve laterally projecting on the side of said guiding axle opposite said bearing bracket, said bearing bracket being pivotally mounted on said arm and having an arcuate slot engaging over said guiding axle.
2. A transportable grinding machine comprising, in combination, a vertical guiding axle, a grinning spindle, a bearing bracket for said grinding spindle, a universal joint con- 2;) necting the grinding spindle with the bearing bracket, a guide sleeve shiftably mounted on said guiding axle, and arm projecting from said sleeve laterally on the side of the guiding axle opposite said bearing bracket, said 3 bearing bracket being pivotally mounted on said arm and having an arcuate slot engaging over said guiding axle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
XVILHELM RINAU.
