EATON, or NAHANT, MASSACHUSETTS, AsSIGNoR 'ro PARCO SPECIALTY y CCMPANY, or LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, A ConroRAToN'or MASSACHUSETTS 1s111717iNG-MACHINE ATTACHMENT This inventionrelatesto Sewing-machine attachments 'and Vmore particularly to that` vvention vtherefore provides a simple, comparatively inexpensive, yet highly efficient class' of attachments which are used in sevv-v ing flat bra-idy or "tape to the edge of sheetl 5 material, for example, a French-cordbind-'vV ing strip which is stitched to onezmargi'nal face of ashoe' upper, folded about the edge of the same,` and-adhesively' secured to theoppo-L site face thereof.' lf'iiij 'i I Thevpresent invention 1s`1particularlyg aptemporary yprotectingl stripl vvhich is `easily" peeled therefrom to permit the braidtof be pressed into adhesive engagement with the face of the sheet in yorder 'to providea. suitable finish for the samel"` `When any attachment of this" character isV utilized in conjunction With'partially coated and cov-ered ybraidr of'-tlie-' 'type ,disclosed in the abovefidentified patent@ it is essential tok l take particular "precautions against twisting of the braid dueto its unsymmetrical form.' 3G Accordingly one aspect Vof the inv'ention're lates to the arrangementof:an'improved form vof braid guiding means includingfa novel form of braid channel Vv'vhicllris particularly adapted Vto cooperate Withvthe typey 3" of tape particularly referred5to,k above.
The device is arranged to-permit`applica-l tion of braid of this character to curved asI well as straight'marginal 'portions ofv the upper, and also permits' the seam to be located lmeans Glisthe presser-foot support 7 which, lin the Aillustrated embodiment ofthe invenl tion,v` extends.: diagonally downward' to the these parts are made'relatively adjustable in? Fig.v 8 is a sectiony onjline18f8 of Fig. 2.
A braiding attachment of the type exem` plified in the accompanying drawings pref-l erably is secured to the presser-'football' ll of the sewing machine, the lower portion of "Which is shovvnin Figs. l tov 4 inclusive. The conventionalineedle bar is` designated bythe numeral 2 and carries the usual needle 3.' Seouredto the baril by any suitable fastening this support carries the rotatable presser-foot pered.knurledsurface 10, Which is adapted to guideway 20.
lVhile I have disclosed here-in a rotary presser-foot and one form of presser-foot bracket, it is to be understood that the present invent-ion is not limited to these types of construction; for example, the upper portion of the bracket 7 may be of entirely different form to fit another type of sewing machine having a differently shaped or positioned presser-foot bar, although the lower partY of this bracket'is preferably standardizedfin all cases in order to fit the interchangeableY or standardized braid guides ofthe type disclosed herewith. A guide of this type preferably has a supporting member designated generally by theV numeral 12 which may be of the form` disclosed in F ig. 6. This member has a flat extension 13 Varranged in close juxtaposition to the inclined portion' of presserfoot 7 and is provided with a flat intermediate portion'14 and with an youtstanding extension 16 having the elongate'opening 17 at its outer end. f
Preferably the braid channel orL guideway 2O is secured to the intermediate portion 14 of .member 12 by soldering, welding or the like.
This braid channel comprises a curved hollow member of substantial rectangular cross section with a comparatively shallow depth, preferably being formed of sheet metal, lapped overas designated by numeral 21,
Figs. 7 and 8, to provide the interior of theguideway with a smaller depth at the side adjoining the needle. Preferably the upper end of guideway 20 is notched or cut away, as designated by numeral 22', so that the inlet portion is effectively provided with a step to engage the partially coated braid with the temporary protecting strip applied to a portion of its width. Preferably opening 17 upon Yextension 16 of member'12 is arranged in juxtaposed relation to the inlet shown in guide 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in order to insure direct movement of the braid into Y the guide channel. v
The intermediate portion of the lower end of the guideway is broken away, as designated by the numeral 24, to permit-the presser-foot 8 toproject between the curved side portions which comprise extensions of the Means are preferably provided to permit adjustment in the eective width of the guideway or braid channel and at the same time to -hold the braid, no matter what its width, against the edge of the channel adjoining needle 3. This adjusting`means is particularly disclosed in Fig. 3, andcompri'ses a small Y lever 40 pivotally'secured to the -wall of the channel andto the ear 41 which comprises an extension of the body portion'of support 12. The outer end of this lever is slotted as more ready engagement with Ya tool. lThus the angular position; of member 40 may bev conveniently varied by loosening the pivot screw and by engaging the end of the screw driver in the slot 42 and swinging the lever to the desired angular position. Obviously the inner end of this lever when properly adjusted engages the edge of the ribbon or tape to hold it against the opposite wall of the guideway. The lower wall of channel 2O preferably is cut away as designated by numeral 44 to afford suitable accessibility for the member 40.
In order to permit accurate adjustment of the guideway 20 in relation to path of needle 3 the extension '13 is adjustably mounted upon bracket 7. Preferably the member 12 and Yconsequently the guide 2O is Vadjustable laterallyas well as backward and forward in relation to the bracket and the presser-foot. For this purpose, I provide an opening in the upper end of extension 13 of the sheet metal member12 and provide an elongate slot 31 below the opening 30. A suitable fastening element 32, such as a screw, extends through the opening 30 and is threaded into -member 7; this element forms a fixed fastening about which the remainder of' the member 12l may be swung either inl abackward and forward or in a lateral Vpath in order accurately to adjust the same. A hollow screw 35 is threaded into the member 7 and an inner screw 36 is threaded into the interiorV of the screw 35. Screw 35 is provided with a slot 37 in order to permit its adjustment while screw 36 extends through the s-lot 31 and is provided with a washer 38 to 'engage the adjoining portion of member 12. Thus loosening of screw 36 permits the swinging of member 12 about screw 32 as a pivot and permits angular adjustment of the guide in relation to the path of the needle, .thus avoiding the necessity of filing the end of the guideway morder to insure the accurate holding of the braid in proper position for stitching. Obviously inward and outward adjustment of the hol-low screw 35 serves to effect the lateral movement of member 12 in relation to member 7, the degree of adjustment permitted by this means being desirably comparatively fine so that the resilience of extension 13 between fasteningsV 32 and 35-,36 permits the minute lateral movement of support 12 in relation to the bracket.
In the operation of the device the presserfoot 8 is caused to rest upon the work and the braid is fed through opening 17 and guide 20 -to the lowermost portion ofl the presserfoot which serves to 'press the braidagainst the basesheet in close juxtaposition to the path of'needle movement.v Obviously the adjustable Inountingfoff-member 2O permits the braid accurately to be positioned so that the seam is located at'the'desireddistance from the Y.margin of the braid and so that the guideway is brought intothe closest practical relation to the 'pathfof-the needle. The
arrangement of the guideway prevents thetape from twisting due to its unsymmetrical formation, thus avoiding one of the outstanding difficulties which has accompanied the use of this braid in braiders heretofore `known to the art. Furthermore, the arrangement of the extension 16 with the guide opening 17 in relation to the stepped inlet end of the guide channel affords a slight drag or light frictional engagement of the moving braid with the braid guiding device, so that too rapid or uneven movement of the tape or braid is avoided, and so that the tape is applied evenly and uniformly to the base sheet or shoe upper.
