Description

A. s. BUNKER & I, Mc-ID ERMOTT. BOTTLE STOPPER. No.179,766. Patented July 11, 1876.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER AND JOHN J. MGDERMOTT, OF LAWRENCE, MASS; SAID BUNKER ASSIGNOR TO SAID MGDERMOTI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,766, dated July 11, 1876; application filed March 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUSTUS S. BUN- KER and JOHN J. MoDERMo'rtr, both of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Oommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a Bottle-Stopper.
The object of our said invention is to furnisha bottle-stopper which shall be simple and durable in its construction, easily and readily applied, and efl'ective for the purpose hereinafter described.
Our invention relates to that class of bottlestoppers in which a sectional collar is employed about the neck of a bottle, and dili'ers from those now in use in having a clamp (to which is attached a lever-cam) extending up and from one side, in place of both, with its cap or cover hinged or joined to the other or opposite side, and so constructed that they will open or unclose in opposite directions, (the clamp and cover,) and with greater ease and rapidity: and we do declare that the following is such a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that others skilled in the art to which it appertains can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- I Figure 1 represents a side and sectional view of our improved stopper; and Fig. 2 repi'esents the wire connecting the cap with 001- A represents the neck of a bottle; B, a collar, designed to pass around the neck of a bottle, and secured thereto by wires, (being in section's;) G, a wire designed to connect the collar B with the cap E, and serve as a means of connecting the sections of the collar B at b; D, a curved clamp, attached to and between the sections of B, and designed to (with the cam H attached thereto) hold the cap E firmly over the mouth of a bottle; E, a
cap provided with the rubber disk or packing,
and designed to cover the mouth of a bottle; F, a rubber disk or packing, designed to seal the bottle; G, a boss placed on the top of the cap E, and designed to form a fulcrum against which to place the lever or cam H, and H a cam and lever attached to the clamp D, and designed to press the cap E to the mouth of a bottle.
To use our improved bottle-stopper, first apply the collar B about the neck of a bottle, securing the same by the wire C and I), when the same is ready for use. When it is desired to stop or seal a bottle, (having our improvement applied,) bring the cover E over the mouth and the clamp over the same, pressing the cam down and against the same, when the bottle is closed. To open a bottle thus sealed, the operation is reversed, to Wit: raise the lever and cam H, throwing the same 011' and raising the cover E, when the bottle is opened.
We have been informed that it is not new to construct bottle-stoppers with pad-carrying plates with connecting-links, as in patent to Wmand David Wilson, No. 102,349, dated April 26, 1870, and we make no claim thereto; but we are not aware that previous to our said invention bottle-stoppers have been constructed as above.
Having thus described our said invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a bottle-stopper, constructed as herein described, the combination of the collar B, the wire link 0, the cap E, the rubber disk F, the boss G, the lever-cam H, (pivoted to the clamp D,) and clamp D, in a manner substantially as set forth.
