Description

P. sssss EL 1,797,625
CUS HHHHHHH EL By @Ww/52ML A llomey P. STRUKEL CUSHION WHEEL March 24, 1931.
Filed March 27, 1930' 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 nvenlor Home y Patented Mar. 24, 12931 UNITED STATES IPHILLIP STRUKEL, OF FOREST CITY, PENNSYLVANIA CUSHION WHEEL Application filed March 27, 1930. Serial No. 489,387.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in resilient wheels, and more particularly to a cushioned Vwheel which will be far more practical in use, and easy-riding than devices of this character which have been heretofore devised and used.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a cushioned tire7 wherein its resilient construction will reduce rebound on rough roadways.
During the course of reading the following specification and claims, other important objects and advantages of the invention will readily become apparent to the reader.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a fragmentary circumferential sectional view disclosing the details involved.
Fig. 2 represents a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
looln'ng in the directions indicated by the arrows.
Y Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 17 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows,
Fig. l is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 vof Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen 3 that the novel wheel comprises a hub 5 and a rim 6 connected to the hub 5 by the spokes 7 which may be of wire, wood, or on the other hand, may be of the segmental disk type.
The rim 6 is of generally conventional construction, and serves in the usual manner to secure the casing 8 against displacement. This casing 8 has a circumferentially extending ring 9 mounted therein for maintaining o the core 10 properly urged against the inner side of the casing 8.
This core 10 is provided with transversely extending openings 11 at predetermined circumferentially spaced intervals. Furthermore, the core is provided with pockets 12, extending outwardly from the inner side thereof. A U-shaped frame 13 is mounted within each pocket 12 and carries a pair of bumpers 141-14, complementary and engageable with the bumpers 15-15 on the portion of the ring 9 exposed to theparticular pockets 12.
Each of these U-shaped frames 13 has its leg portion provided with threaded extensions 16 which are disposed through openings in the ring 9 and secured against displacement by the nuts 17. Interposed be-v tween the bight portion of each U-shaped frame, and the adjacent portion of the ring 9 is a compressible coiled spring 18. y
Between each pocket l2 around the `circum-V ference of the wheel is a transverse opening 19 of semi-circular cross section, through which a plate 21 is disposed. -Through each end cf this plate 21 is a hingedly connected leg 22 which is connected at its inner end to a cross member 23 by the pin 24.
The plate 21 and leg 22 serve as rebound checks and serve to limit the rebound action of the wheel.
Vhile the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms,it is to be un7 dersto'od that numerous changes in the shape. size and materials may be resorted to withf out departing from the spirit and scope of the invention asclaimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A. resilient wheel ofthe character described comprising a rim, a casing circumscribing the rim. a core for the casing, an annulus mounted within the Casing. pockets on the inner side of the core adjacent the annulus, U-shaped members secured to the annulus and projecting into'the pockets. and spring means interposed between the annulus and each of the U-shaped members.
2. Ak resilient wheel of the character described comprising a rim, a casing circumscribing( the rim, a core for the casing, ran annulus mounted within the casing, pocketsV on the inner side of the core adjacent the annulus, U-shaped members secured tothe annulus and projecting into the pockets, and spring means interposed between the annulus and each of the U-shaped members, and bumpers onV the U-shaped members and annulus for cooperation with each other.
In testimony whereof I-aiilx my signature.
PI-IILLIPV STRUKEL.
