This invention relates'to abrasive wheels and particularly to an abrasive wheel havlng segmental blocks of abrasive material ar- 4 ranged in a circular or arcuate series.
5 An object of the present invention is to provide a wheel or chuck of the above type having improved securing means for the abrasive blocks adapting them to be convenlently adjusted to advanced positions as they become worn and adapted also to securely retain them in their adjusted positions.
Another objectof the invention is to provide the wheel or chuck with an integral outside flange preferably of slightly conical form and having bearing members inserted within its inner face against which the abrasive blocks may be securely held by clamping members adjustably attached to theintegral outside flange.
Another object of the invention is to mount the abrasive segments in slightly tilted position so that the lower or work engaging surfaces of the segments will be at a slightly greater diameter from the wheel axis than the upper ends of the segments and water, as it is supplied from within the wheel, w1ll be forced by centrifugal force outwardly upon the worl This disposition of the segments also permits grinding closelyto a shoulder on the work. 7 Another object of the invention is to provide clamping members in the form of strips adapted to contact upon the inner arcuate surfaces of adjacent abrasive blocks and being held in position to retain the blocks in fixedposition between the clamping members and the outer integral flange.
Another object of the invention is to provide a series of supplementary clamping members engaging adjacent segments and adapted, when the segments have. become worn and moved outwardly, to be placed above the segments to form backing or supporting members therefor.
Another object of the invention is to provide bearing members in the flange and clamping members, oppositely disposed in pairs so that they will engage portions on the outside and inside surfaces of the segments ments of abrasive material or blocks which are directly opposite each other.
Finally, another object of the invention is to adjustably mount the bearing members within the flange and clamping strips so that these members may accommodate themselves to the curvature of the outer and inner walls of the segments.
With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the invention embodied in a chuck or wheel for a plane surface grinder, but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawings are not to be construedas defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended tothis specification being relied upon for that purpose.

In the above mentioned drawings I have shown but'one embodiment of the invention which is now deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes andvmodificascope ofthe tions may be made within the appended claims without spirit of the invention. 1
Brieflyand in its broadest aspect, my in vention comprises the following principal parts first, a ring member having an integral outer flange depending therefrom preferably formed slightly conical; second, bearing members adj ustably secured within the inner wall of this outer flange; third, blocks or segadapted to be redeparting from the tained in position against these bearing members; fourth, clamping members engaging inher arcuate surfaces of adjacent abrasive segments; and fifth, securing means for holding the clamping members in posit-ion against the abrasive blocks.
Referring more in detail to the figures of the drawings, I provide a ring member forming a body member .of the .chuck which is adapted to besecured to a plate or other mem-' ber 11 adapted to be rotatably mounted upon a spindle 12 of any conventional or preferred form so that it may be rapidly rotated. In order to secure the ring member 10 to this plate 11, screws 13 (one of which only is shown) are provided so that the ring member 10 may be quickly detached from the plate 11 for substitution of other rings upon the machine spindle.
This ring member 10 forming the body member of the chuck is provided with an integral downwardly extending flange 15 which is preferably slightly conical, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. Mounted within the inner surface of the integral flange 15 are bearing members 16, two of these being provided for each of the abrasive blocks 17 It will be understood that any number of abr-asive blocks 17 may be employ-ed, depending upon the diameter of the chuck and the uses to whichthe chuck is to be put. These bearing members 1 6, as shown in Fig. 2, are of curved outersur face and preferably are dovetailed along their upper and low-er surfaces soth-a-t they will be readily retained in place and permitted to adjust themselves to'properly engage against the outer surfaces of the abrasive blocks 17. In order to prevent the bearing members 16 from accidental removal from the chuck, small screws 18 are inserted extending into suitable openings in the flange 15, thus permitting a slight amount of adj ustment but preventing them from being entirely removed.
In order to hold "the blocks of abrasive material 17 against the outer bearing members 16 clamping plates or members-2O and 26 are provided, preferably held in place by suitable screws 21 extending through the integral flange 15 of the ring member so that these clamping plates 20 may be adjusted to rigidly secure the abrasive blocks 17 in position. As shown clearly in Fig. 2, these screws 21 extend through abutments 22 formed by projections extending from the integral flange 15 and have the heads of the screws 21 countersunk within the outer surfaces thereof, By so mounting these clamping screws 21, the clamping plates 20 and 26 may be adjusted from the outside of the chuck.
As shown in Fig. 1, these clamping mem-- bers 20 and 26 are adapted to contact with the contiguous ends of adjacent blocks 17, the clamping screw for each plate 20 and 26 being disposed centrally of these members.
Also, as shown in Fig. 1, these clamping plates or members 20 and 26 are arranged in pairs superposed relative to each other so that contact may be made with the blocks 17 at a plurality of points along their height. Preferably also bearing members 24 may be inserted within the outer curved surf-aces of the lower clamping members 20 similar in form to those mounted within the flange and adapted to be retained by screws 25 in the same manner.
The upper series of clamping strips 26, as shown in Fig. 1, instead of having bearing members 24 inserted in their outer surface are provided with rounded projections 27 adapted to contact with the abrasive blocks "17 adjacent the lower edges of these clamping members 20.
When the blocks or segments 17 have become worn they are removed and the upper or supplementary clamping strips 26 are screwed, by means of screws 21, outwardly 'untilthey are forced incontact with the integral projections 22. The segments 17 are then repositioned with their upper surfaces contacting with the lower faces of the supplementary strips 26. The upper surfaces of the supplementary strips 26 are in contact, as shown in Fig. 3, with oblique annular surface 28 on the ring member 1-0. lVith the blocks or segments 17 and the strips 26 disposed ;as shown in Fig. 3, a solid metal backing is provided for the pressure of tie wheel against the work during operation. The strips 20 are clamped against the blocks 17 in the same manner as with blocks of original height.
As shown in Fig. 2,, the sides of the projections or abutments 22 are oblique, and, placing the abrasive blocks 17 in position, one end of each of the blocks 17 is placed in contact with oneof the side walls of these projections or abutments.
What I claim is 1. An abrasive wheel comprising 1n combination, a ring member having an lnteg-ral outer flange thereon of slightly conical form, bearing portions on the inner surface of said flange, abrasive blocks within 1sa1d flange and engaging said bearing portions and having their work engaging tends tilted outwardly, clamping members engaging contiguous .ends of adjacent blocks and forcing said blocks outwardly against said flange, and means to secure said clamping members .to said flange.
2. An abrasive wheel comprising in combination, a "ring member having an integral outer flange thereon, bearing members adjustably mounted on the inner surface ofisa-id flange, abrasive blocks within said flange and engaging said bearing members, a plurality of clampinmembers engaging contiguous ends of adjacent blocks, and means to secure said clamping members to said flange.

An abrasive wheel comprising in combination, a ring member having an integral outer flange thereon, bearing members adjustably mounted on the inner surface of said flange, arcuate abrasive blocks within said flange and supported by said flange and hear ing members obliquely and with their lower ends extending outwardly, clamping members adapted to engage contiguous ends of adjacent blocks, and means to secure said clamping members to said flange.
5. An abrasive wheel comprising in combination, a ring member having an integral outer flange thereon, bearing portions on the inner surface of said flange, abrasive blocks within said flange and engaging said bearing portions, clamping members having bearing members inserted therein adapted to engage contiguous ends of adjacent blocks, supplemental clamping members also engaging contiguous ends of adjacent blocks, and means to secure said clamping members to said flange.

An abrasive wheel comprisingin combination, a ring member having an integral outer flange thereon, bearing members adj ustably mounted on the inner surface of said flange, arcuately formed abrasive blocks within said flange having their lower ends extended outwardly and engaging said bearing members upon their side surfaces, clamping members having bearing members adjustably mounted therein adapted to engage contiguous ends of adjacent blocks, supplemental clamping members also engaging contiguous ends of adjacent blocks, and means to secure said clamping members to said flange.

An abrasive wheel comprising in combination, a ring member having an integral outer flange thereon, bearing members adj ustably mounted on the inner surface of said flange, arcuate abrasive blocks within said flange and engaging said bearing members, a clamping member having bearing members inserted therein oppositely disposed when in operative position to the bearing members in said flange and adapted to engage contiguous them outwardly toward the flange, and supplementary clamping members adapted to engage the inner walls of said blocks when of bers engaging contiguous ends of adjacent blocks and directly forcing said blocks outwardly, and means to secure members to said flange.
