WAL- DEN, INCORPORATED, OF WORCESTER, MASSAGEEISIJ'II'IS,A Av CORPORATION 0E AS'- SACHUSETTS WRENCH Application filed January 7, 1930.I Serial No. 419,178.
This invention relates to that type of Wrench in Which tWo heads are pivotally connected With the handle on axes at right angles to the length ot' the handle.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide improved heads for the type of Wrench shown and claimed in my prior patent, Reissue No. 16,354, issued J une 16, 1925, on original Letters Patent No. 1,542,336; to
provide an improvement in which a larger number of tools will be made available for use in a single device and in fact, in its preferred form, it is provided with fifteen inembers adapted to tit different nuts, heads,
sockets, slots and the like and to provide a plug Wrench having a number of individual members, each one being capable of being used at any desired angle and With l'ull el!- iiciency at all angles.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Fig. 1 is a side vieW'of a complete Wrench constructed in accordance With this inven tion;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same;
Figs. 3 and l are sectional views on the lines 3-3 and 4 4 respectively o1 Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a side viewr of one end of the Wrench handle or shank with the wrench head removed; and
' Fig. 6 is a side view of one of the heads.
This invention is shown as appliedto a Wrench handle or shank 10 in the form of a bar or Wire, preferably straight from end to end, but having the two ends extending at right angles therefrom and constituting studs 11 parallel With each other and perpendicular with theshank yfor receiving two Wrench heads 12 and 13. The principle of this Wrench is covered in my above mentioned reissue and the improvement consists in the heads.
Each of the heads 12 and 13, instead of being provided With two sockets as shown in said reissue, is provided With four members which can be in the form of sockets or plugs or both. The head 12 is shown as having four square plugs 14, 15, 16 and 17. all of dit'erent sizes, and each adapted to entera square hole. Three of' these, namely 14,16
and17vv are also provided with. square sockets 18%, also three different sizes. The fourth )lug 15 is provided with a hexagon socket '95 and with a groove 20 extending entirely across. it from side tov side. The hexagon socket ofcourse is for a hexagon nut orhead and the groove is for a straight rib. or pro: jection.
It will be obvious that this head can be turned on its stud 11 to. any desired angle with respect to the handle or shank 10. and that the desired socket or plug can be put into juxtaposition with the. article to he turned. The handle extends from it in the proper direction for 'securing an effective level-age and can be turned up on the axis oai the stud 11 to. dilerent angles for convenience, and still will have considerable l'ev einge for turning' the desiied element.Y It will' be seen that this head provides nine wrenches or tools,v
Thev other head 13 is similarly provided with a series of :tour square` plugs 22, 23, 24 and 25. YIn spite of the configuration ofV two of them, which will be described later, theyv all serve as square plugs for the same pure poses as the plugs on the other head but are made of smaller sizes fQ-r an obvious purpose.A In addition to the tour plugs, t'woof them are provided with diagonal projections. 26 and: 27 extending from; corner to, corner and constituting in effect screw-driver tips. This head therefore, as shown, presents six tools adapted to be used in six; dierent kinds of places making iteenk in. all,
1t is. believed that no Wrench has ever been provided furnishing such a large. number of separate tools or individual Wrenches all ca.-V pable of being used at, any desired angle. The heads turn freely on their studs 11, and; yetthereis. nojtendencyr @ttl-'1e Wrench to slip O' or out of the article to Which it is applied because when it is turned the turning motion is always about the axis of that article and there is really no force used in the ordinary application of the Wrench which will have any important tendency to dislodge the plug or Wrench socket or the like from the article "mil to which it is applied. This is a very convenient tool to use and very inexpensivebecause so many tools are embodied in it.
In order to hold each head 12 and 13 in position on the studk 11 the stud is provided With a spring pressed roundheaded pin or ball 30 extending radially and projecting into a circumferential concave groove 31 in the inside of the head. This avoids the riv-U eting over of the end of the stud 11 and holds the head against removal in an axial v'direction accidentally, although it can be removed by exerting enough force on it, because the'v groove has no square shoulder.V AThis pin also exerts a little friction so the head Will'not spin` on thek stud and Willbe `held With some degree of force in any position in Which it may be placed, thus adding to the certainty of the'operation and theefliciency of the tool. Although yI have illustratedand described a single embodiment of the Ainvention and Vshown arspecificwrench in which fifteen different tools are embodied, I am aware of the fact that the same principle can be, carried out with the adoption of more or-'less tools and that other modifications can kbe made Y therein by any person skilled in theart with out departing from the scopek of theinvention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not Wish to be limited in these respects, but what I do claim'is zy1., As-an article of manufacture, a Wrench comprising a handle or shank having a studV projecting at right anglesfrorn its end, a head rotatably mounted on the stud and having Yprojections extending from the diiferent sides thereof, said projections 'having a gpo# lygonal shape and being of different sizes to constitute a 'plurality of different Wrench plugs, certain of said plugs'. being provided With straight sided projections extending.
diagonally from corner tov corner and constituting screw-driver tips, whereby` those plug serve two different purposes. 2.. As an article of manufacture, a Wrench comprising a'handlevor shank havingV a stud projecting from its end, a head mounted on the stud land having a projection extending frorn'thel side thereof, said projection having va polygonal shape, and being provided with a straight sided projection extending diagonally from corner tol corner and constituting a screW-driver-tip constitutingvpart of the plug.
Y `In testimony hereof I have hereunto afiixe'dmy signature. f
