-RECOVERY MEANS FOR MACHINE-CONSTRUCTION DEVICES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec; re, rare.
Application filed November 19, 1915. Serial No. 62,332.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE F. LOWE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Recovery Means for Machine- Construction Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
lid
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide articles of the character mentioned with means for recovering the same to prevent loss thereof; to provide a recovery device of simple and inexpensive construction; and
to provide a recovery device which does not,
interfere with the operation of the element to which it is applied. I
Drawings.-Fi re 1 is aview of a spring band, the ends w ereof are connected by a screw and nut having a recovery device constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective showing a lock nut and a recovery device constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a screw bolt provided with a device constructed in "accordance with the present invention; Fig. 4 isa detail view of a keeper constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
, Desmtptoa.-As seen in the drawings, a-
nnt 8 and screw head 9 are each provided with a groovelO for receiving a snap recovery keeper .11.. The keeper 11 has an eyelet 12 formed preferably as shown in the drawings, by an outward median bend of the wire forming the recovery keeper 11.;
All nuts and screw heads when made in conformity with the present invention are provided with a groove within which the said keepers are disposed either at the time of manufacture or at the time of use. Preliminary to using a nut or screw thus equipped, a cord 13, or other recovery device, is secured to the eyelet 12. to be held by the mechanic applying the nut or screw, or'for attachment to some adjustable part of the structure with which the nut or screw is being incorporated.
It will be seen that when nuts or screw heads are thus equipped, the attachment does not interfere with the use of a wrench or other tool for tightening or setting up said nuts or screw heads.
Screws and nuts usually equipped with recovery devices of the character'described, are of such as are employed in constructions where if the article is dropped, it would be difiicult to recover the same, or where if not withdrawn, would damage the moving parts of the machinery.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the screw and nut are applied to a brake band usual in the construction of a certain type of automobiles, and disposed therein in a position where the parts are somewhat inaccessible or .difiicult to apply, and where if dropped they fall into obscure or inconvenient receptacles.
I claim:
The combination of a temporarily removably, rotatively applied device for use in machine construction, said device having an annular groove; and a keeper rotatively mounted in said groove, said keeper having an extended portion. for engagement by a flexible recovery device.
