This invention relates to picture hangers,

and it isan object of theinvention to provide a device of this kind which, when in applied or working position, .is concealed by the pics ture with which it is employed.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind whereby the picturefis supported in a manner to eliminate wabbling or other derangement of the piclf tur-e andwherein the mounted picture is effectively braced against displacement from the action of draftY or wind.

Anadditional object of the invention is to provid'ea` device of this kind wherein the major portion of the weight of the picture isimposed fromabovefupon the device, thus relieving the lower portion of the picture frame froml the load whichwouldotherwise be imposed thereon.

The inventionconsists in the details of construction and in thecombination and arrangement of the'several parts of my improved picture hanger whereby certain important advantages are attained' and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, asl will'be-hereinafter more fully set forth. i

In the embodiment of my invention as particularly illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the hanger comprises an elongated plate 1 of desired dimensions and material and which is provided at substantially its transverse center with a plurality 0f longitudinally aligned openings 2 affording means whereby any suitable type of headed members 3 may be employed for securely anchoring the device in po-sition upon a wall or other desired support.

At substantially its transverse center the upper part ot the plate 1 is provided with an upstanding and upwardly facing hool; member 4 and at points below the hook member 4 and adjacent to its opposite margins, the plate 1 is provided with the eye members or loops 5. The members or loops 5 are preferably coplanar in a direction transversely oi the plate 1 and are positioned ior relatively close proximity to the hook member 1.

rllhe lower end portion of the plate l is provided with a forwardly or outwardly disposed ledge or foot 6 directed transversely of the plate 1 and substantially perpendicular thereto. The outer corner portions of the ledge or toot G are provided with the upstanding pointed or penetrating members 7. rlhe plate 1 is adapted to be suitably anchored in position upon a. wall or other support and when so applied is in position to have operatively engaged therewith the icture to be hung. In referring to a picture it is to be understood that I have in mind the picture itself together with a frame and other associated parts.

In applying the picture I), as indicated by broken lines in Figure 8, the lower edge thereof is supported directly by the ledge or foot G and with the lower marginal face ot the picture preferably in direct engagement from above with the members 7, said members impinging or penetrating the picture and thus affording an effective means to hold the picture against slippage with respect to the plate 1 and otherwise serve to maintain the picture in desired position.

The rear orn the picture has secured thereto in a conventional manner, as at 8, the extremities or a picture wire 9 or the like which has its intermediate portion engaged over the hook member 4 or through the eye members 5 or, it desired, in operative engagement with both. By this means the hanger is substantially concealed behind the applied picture, yet at the same time the picture P is supported in a manner to hold the same against wabbling and to resist displacement by the action of wind or draft or other causes, such as building vibration.

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, the lower end portion of the plate 1 is provided with the outwardly disposed elongated arms 10 provided at their outer or free extremities with the upstanding pointed or penetrating meinbers 7. The ar .is 10 serve as a shelf or toot and in this embodiment or" my invention the hanger is otherwise constructed as hereinbefore set forth with respect to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive and the picture is engaged therewith in the same manner.

In Figures 8 to 11 inclusive I set forth an embodiment of my invention which is especially adapted for store or gallery display and wherein the hanger is adapted to be operatively engaged with a supporting rod 11. The rod 11 is provided at one extremity with a depemling arm or pintle 12 freely disposed through a supporting member 14 whereby the rod li may be readily swung or adjusted as may be preferred. In connection with a single hanger I find it ot advantage to employ a plurality ot rods 1l, thus assuring the picture associated therewith being supported with a maximum of eiliciency.

In this embodiment of my invention the hanger comprises a plate 1a provided with a hook member lo and the eye members 5a as hercinbefore set forth with respect to the first embodiment oi my invention. The plate 1o also carries the outstanding foot or ledge 6a". rEhe rear tace of the plate 1a has welded, soldered or otherwise secured thereto the longitudinally aligned blocks 15 which are adapted to snugly and slidably engage the rods 11 and locked to the rods 11 in desired selective position through the instrumentality oft the binding screws 16.

In this embodiment of my invention, the ledge or foot Ga has associated therewith a supplemental ledge or foot 17 adapted to be adjusted toward or from the plate 1o as desired and which supplemental foot or ledge 17 is locked in desired adjustment through the medium of one or more clamping elements, generally indicated at 18. The supplemental toot or ledge 17 carries the upstanding members 7a which, in the present embodiment of my invention, may be extended in advance of the lower portion of an as sociated picture to facilitate the maintenance of the picture in desired applied position with respect to the hanger.

rI'he embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figures 12 and 13 is substantially the same as that shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive except that the main or body plate comprises two lapping sections l, said sections at substantially their transverse centers being provided with the longitudinally spaced openings 19 and 20 with which are selectively engaged the holding screws 21. By this means the hanger may be readily and conveniently adjusted as to length in order to permit the hanger to be employed to advantage and eiiect in connection with pictures of varying sizes.

The invention as illustrated in Figure 14 is also substantially the same as hereinbefore described except that the eye members 5 are provided by pressing out portions of the plate 1?) and providing said outwardly pressed or disposed portions with suitable openings. In this arrangement it is to be noted that the eye members 5 are contained within the lield of the plate 1b. It is to be herein stated that these same forms of eye members are equally adaptable to the other embodiments of my invention hereinbefore set forth.

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 the lower portion of the plate 1c is provided with the slots or recesses 22 each of which being adapted to receive an extended part or mem ber 23 carried by the lower portion of the picture, or more particularly the picture frame, whereby such picture is effectively supported by the hanger. It is to be understood that the slots or recesses 22 are of such a character as to permit the plate 10 to support the applied picture from below.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a picture hanger constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by rea` son of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim l. A picture hanger comprising a platelike member provided with a ledge to engage a marginal portion of a picture frame or the like, and cord engaging means carried by the plate-like member on the opposite marginal edge portions thereof above the ledge, the outer portions of the ledge being provided with upstanding members, said cord engaging means being mounted on the edges of the plate in outstanding relation thereto.

2. A picture hanger comprising a platelike member provided with a ledge to engage a marginal portion of a picture frame or the like, and cord engaging means carried by the plate-like member on the opposite marginal edge portions thereof above the ledge, the outer portions of the ledge being provided with upstanding pointed members, said cord engaging means being mounted on the edges of the plate in outstanding relation thereto.

3. A picture hanger comprising a plate member provided with a ledge for engagement with a picture frame or the like from below. and means carried by the plate member above the ledge for coaction with the picture frame or the like to hold said frame or the like in desired position with respect to the ledge, said means including eye portions carried by the plate in outstanding relation on the marginal edges thereof through which a picture cord is adapted to be directed.
