Description
J. 3mm. VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Patented Jul y 4, 1876 .No.1'l9,507.
N.PETERS, FNOTO-UTHDGRAPNER. WASHINGTON, D C.
JOHN BEISER, OF OOVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,507, dated July 4, 1876 application filed April 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BEISER, of Govington, Kenton county, State of Kentucky, have invented an Improvement in Vegetable- Outters, of which the following is a specificaswaged up to form the cutters or knives.
My improvement consists in so constructing this form of a vegetable-cutter that the knives will face in opposite directions from the middle of the plate, which feature enables me to cut a slice or slices from a vegetable at the return stroke as well as at the forward stroke.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cutter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A is a sheet-metal plate, whose sides are bent or rolled around a continuous bail, B, the bail being of such length that it extends beyond the end of the plate A at b b, and forms handles for the operator to grasp in using, as shown in the drawing. The plate is slit laterally crosswise far enough to leave a moderate. margin of metal on each side adjoining its connection with the bail. The
plate A is then swaged in such a manner that the metal between any two contiguous slits, while retaining its flat surface, presents an angle to the original surface, one half projecting on one side, and the other half projecting on the other side, of the plate, thus forming double blades or cutters a. These blades can be then sharpened up,and the cutter, although made of untempered metal to economize in manufacture, will, by reason of its increased capacity, (being afourfold cutter,) last as long as the ordinary tempered cutter of one blade, and cost less. The blades are so directed that they face each way from the center blade a, and form two distinct cutters, G D, on each side of the plate.
As shown in the drawing, the blades are all swaged so as to make uniform cuts; but it is obvious that the blades upon one side of the center blade a may be more violently swaged than the other side, and take a deeper out in operation, and this being the case, the increased advantage of doing away with two cutters, or the necessity of adjustment in the adjustable cutters, is avoided and should the cutters become dull by use, they, not being tempered, are easily sharpened.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed vegetablecutter, having knives facing in opposite directions, substantially as specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereuntoset my hand.
JOHN BEISER.
