A. CORPORATION OF GEEMANY MARINE VESSEL Application. filed .T anuary 5, 1929, Serial No.
My invention relates to improvements in marine vessels of all Y nds, in which an electric motor is employ ror any purpo-se and exposed to the isl t injury by sea-water.
i case with electric motors by ineans which a propeller is driven. To oi t ct such a motor against the water it is usualy housed in a chamber constructed oiE watertight walls. A watertight the driving niotor facing he propeller. lt is, however, necessary to provide this wall with a bore tor passingI thro-ugh the driv'ing shaft and a special stuffing-boi; is then necessary at tnis place.
According to my invention one bearing shield of the motor is adapted to serve directly as watertight wall. ln this way a special partition wall with a paclred opening for the passage of the motor shaft becomes supertluous, so that the space within the boat can be better utilized.
ln the drawing ai ned hereto and forming part of my specilication is illustrated an einbodiment ot my invention, by way ot example.
Referring to the drawing showing a sectional plan, l is the driving motor ot' a boat with Jrhe driving shalt 2. rlhe bearing or end shield 3 of the motor is designed as watertight partition or bulkhead and separates the l compartment l at the iear end oi: the boat 'roin the hold of the vessel. Between the motor compartment and the rstorage battery compartment 5 may be provided a second bullrhead 6. T he bearingishield or partition 3 may be provided wit strengthening ribs to enable it to withstand high pressures.
My invention may also be applied to steertypes orn marine motors. lt may equally well be used on torpedoes and submarines.
Various modications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention, and l desire, theretore, that only such limitations shall. be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art.
l claim as my invention:
l. ln a marine vessel containing an electric motor for driving the propeller. a shield 330,568, and in Germany January 11, 1928.
on the pi'opellerside ot the motor having a watertight bearing and forming part of the motor casing, said shield extending beyond the circumference of said casing and adapted to serve as a watertight bulkhead for the vessel compartment in which the motor is located.
. 2. l'n a marine vessel containing an electric motor for driving the propeller, a shield on the propeller side ot the motor having a watertight bearing and forming part or" the motor casing, said shield extending' beyond the circumference ot' said casing substantially to the vessel walls to serve as a watertight bulkhead toi' the vessel compartment in which the motor is located and a ledge on the inner walls ot the vessel upon which said shield is mounted.
ln testimony whereoiC l aiiiir my ignature.
