This invention relates to envelopes and more particularly to. duplex or combination envelopes, having for its object an improved duplex envelope of a design and construction efiect-ing a considerable saving of paper,
appear more fully in the hereinafter specification, when taken in connection with the while affording a convenient and substantial container for mail matter.
Other objects and advantages of themeth- 0d and construction herein. employed will accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of an envelope em bodying my invention. r
' Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. a
Fig. 3 is'a view of the .reverse side of the envelope, and f Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 8 designates the body portion of envelope A, having top and bottom flaps 9 and 10 respectively, which are folded and gummed to form a sealed back 11. A flap l2 permanently closes the envelope A at one end, while the sealing flap 13 may be used to entirely close the envelope against inspection of contents or it may be tucked into the main compartment 14 in the usual manner for inclosure of other than first class matter.
As an important feature of my invention,
the blank 15 having side flaps 16, 17 and a bottom flap 18, all sealed to the front portion 8 of the envelope A, is provided. The top flap 19 of the blank15 is gummed about the border, as best shown in Fig. 1, while on the back of the strip 19 which lies immediately above the longitudinal slot 20, a gummed surface 21 is also provided. The blank 15 as applied to the envelope A constitutes a second envelope or container either for first class mail, 'or,.if the flap 19 is merely tucked into the slot leading tothe inner compartment,
22 of the. smaller envelope, for mail of other classification. 7
When the smaller envelope is to be used for first class mail, the gummed surface 21 will be sealed against the front of the large envelope A and the top flap 19 then folded by Letters Patent is: I 1. A duplex envelope comprising in combi- STATES OFF ner indicated, by merely pasting, gumming,.}
or otherwise afiixing by machine process the blank15 to the larger container A. It will be observed that inthe formation of'thesmaller container the front wall of thelarge envelope A serves also as the back wallof the" smaller container, in this manner a substantial saving of paper stock being secured.
Blank-15 is practically an envelope with the It is to be understood that slight changes may be made inform, proportion and arrangement of parts; hence I do not confine myself to the details as set forth but desire to avail myself of such variationsand emfront wall removed, the flap19 being the conventional sealing flap;
bodiments as fairly fall within the scopeof the appended claims.
' What I claim as new and desire to nation an individual complete envelope havlnga separate comparatively large compartsecure 1' ment for the reception of mail matter, a
second envelope directlygummed'to said individual envelope after the frontvwall of thesecond envelope has been removed and the bottom and end flaps have been unfolded and sealed to the exterior surfaceof the front wall of the individual envelope, said second envelope being also provided with av flap adapted to be sealed [over a slot formedv at its upper part of the second envelope, said slot serving optionally to admit mail matter of different classifications, whereby the secondenevelope maybe used to enclose first class mailmatter and to enclosemail matter of other description, "while said. individual envelope may enclose other than first class matter.
2.} A duplex envelope comprising, in com- V bination, an individual complete envelope having a separate comparatively large compartment for the reception of mail matter, a blank provided with side, and bottom flaps gummed directly to said individual envelope and also provided with a sealing flap Whereby a second envelope is formedbetween said blank and said individual, envelope, said blank provided with a slot adjacent said sealing flap whereby said second envelope may be used to enclose'mailsmatter of differ;
ent classifications. p
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM Rim.
