COLLAPSIBLE BOX Filed March 20. 1929 INVENToR.-
Patented Feb. 17, 1931 LOUIS J. SPITZENBERGER, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA COLLAPSIBLE BOX'.
Application led March 20, 1929. ySerial N'o. 348,489.
My invention relates to boxes in general land more particularly to boxes made of paper, cardboard, fibre and other suitable flat material and to be used for various purposes such as containers for candy, pills, 'or like articles. The main object is to provide a substantial box made of a single piece of material and adapted to be easily and readily assembled for use, without the necessity of using glue or like holding means. This box is the so-called shoulder type most commonly used as in drug stores forholding a Vquantity of pills, powders and the like. In larger sizes it is practical for candy, stationery, cards and other merchandise. 'Further objects and advantages of my improved box are hereinafter fully set forth reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which,-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank sheet or form showing a blank for a square type shallow box.
Fig. 2 is a top View of a box assembled from a blank of the type illustra-ted in Fig. 1, the top or cap part of the box being shown in opened position.
ig. 3 is a rear edge view of the box shown in Fig. 2 and closed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved box with the cover raised, the nearside flange (-Isaid cover broken to give a clear view of the interior.
Fig. 5 is a top view of the box shown in Fig.
2, looking down on the cap, thebox beingl closed.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, I have illustrated a blank form adapted to be assembled to provide a square type shallow box of the so-called shoulder type best shown in Fig. 4., but it will be readily understood that its features of details, proportions and assembling may be varied to provide finished boxes of other shapes, a
square type being shown and described to best advantage. l
In Fig. 1 heavy black outlines indicate the outline and cuts of the blank from which a box as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 is assembled. Dotted lines indicate creases or folding operator is a lines in the blank to facilitate the assembling or forming of the box.
5 is a top panel, 6 a like base or bottom panel, and 7 is a false-bottom panel arranged to lie on panel 6 when the box is assembled. 55 Panels 5 and 6 are separated normally by an integral strip 5H having a central crease 5H serving as a hinge for the assembled cover of the box and the width of said strip determining the depth ofthe box. 5F and 5G G0 are right and left side flanges formed integral withl panel 5 and divided therefrom only by crease lines 11, while 5C is a like flange adjoining at line 12 the outer edge of panel 5. To the right and left of said flange 5G are adf joining flange sections 5D and 5E (right) and 5Avand 5B (left) of which 5E and 5A are at the extreme right and left, flange 5A having an upwardly opening central notch 13 and flange 5E having a like downwardly 70 opening notch 14. Likewise the bottom panel 6 has an adjoining outer flange 6C, left side flange 6E and rivht side flange 6G. -To the right of flange 66 are two alined flanges 6D and 6E, and to the left thereof like flanges 7 6B and 6A. The outermost of said latter flanges 6A and 6E have notches 13A. and 14A corresponding to notches 13 and 14 previously described and `for a purpose to be presf ently stated. 30
7A, 7B, 7C, 7D and 7E is a row of flanges adjoining each other on the creases 15 and panel 7A connected at crease 16 to the strip 5H separating the top and bottom panels 5 and 6. The false bottom 7 adjoins panel 7D on crease line 17 and 7E is la comparatively short flange at the extremity of the line of flanges 'iA-7 E inclusive. These wide flanges (7A-7E incl.) are approximately the same width as the strip 5H and extend preferably one Way therefrom in parallel relation to the respective upper and lower lines of flanges Cil The assembling of the box from its blank form is a sim le process. Assuming that an gout to assemble a box from a blank as illustrated in Fig. l, he first bends the Wide flanges 7A-7E inclusiveat their creases 15-16 into square formation with the short piece 7 E bearing against the inner Cil 4flange GC of the base is bent up on its crease 1S to bear against the outer lower part of section 7B (Fig. 2) and the respective right and leftcontinuation flanges (il.) and Gli are folded in against the sections (3G and (3F of the base 6. Thus the extreme end parts GIG and GA protrude rearwardly from the stri p 5H which is now of course in verti al plane. and said pieces GE and 6A are folded toward cach other against the back of strip 5H and interlocked at their notched parts 13A and 14A (sec Fig. 3).
It will now be understood that a double walled upwardly opening box body (as Fig. l) has been assembled, in which the inner and wider quadrangularly formed panels 7A to 7E inclusive project upwardly from the false bottom 7, and project above the upper edge of the similarly formed exterior flanges GA, 6B, 6C, GD and 6E, bearing inwardly on the exterior faces of the wider flanges, thus forming the shoulder effect as at S in Fig. 4.
Now the cover is similarly formed by first folding its side panels 5F and 5G up at right angles from the cover panel 5. then folding the outer multi-section flange (5A-5E inclusive) upwardly so that section 5C closes the third side of panel 5, forming a U-shape in connection with the flange pieces 5F and 5G. Then the sections 5D and 5B are folded inwardly against the outer faces of side panel flanges 5G and 5F respectively. Thus the top panel is inclosed on three sides by said flanges 5F, 5G, 5B, 5C and 5D and the fourth side comprises the upper half of strip 5H (above crease H). Said fourth side is further reinforced and the cover made rigid and held assembled by folding the extreme flanges 5A and 5E toward each other against thel upper half of strip 5H and interlocking them at the notches 13--14 see Fig. 3). Now the cover is complete and integrally connected to the main box at the crease 5H of the strip 5H which latter is in reality the outer rear wall of the box proper.
The cover of course can be swung forward and down to fit snugly about the quadrangularly arranged protruding parts of the flanges 7A-7E inclusive and stops against the shoulder S. The box thus closed (as in Figs. 3 and 5) is substantial and well set up, resists breaking and is practical in various sizes for different purposes.
Hitherto, in the box industry, small paper boxes particularly have been assembled and shipped ready for use, obviously taking up much space. Such boxes, as now made, are also assembled in a costly manner involving use of' glue. llfy improved box may be shipped in blank form in a minimum of space and isreadily assembled at shipping destination or assembled only one at a time as needed.
I claim:

3.. A box made of a single piece of flat maferial comprising a base panel, a top or cover panel and aA false-bottom panel, a spacing strip between said cover and base panels, multi-section flange .strips formed integral with each said cover and base panel, rzind single section side flanges formed integral with said cover and base panels, all said seetional parts separated by crease lines or an equivalent to readily bend the flange strips in continuous formation about their respective panels and upright thereon, cach box body comprising the false bottom panel and its flange members about it and lying concentric on the base panel and subsequently raising the flange parts of said base and against the flange parts of the false bottom and means for interlocking the said base lUU lll.)
flanges to inclose the lower areas of the false base-panel flanges.
4. The structure specified in claim 3 and each box cover comprising said cover panel, its side flanges raised upright thereon and its multi-section flange also raised and bent at the crease lines to form a qnadrangular upright flan e about the cover anel and its raised side gauges and means or interlocking the end sections of said multi-section ange at one side of the said cover panel, said cover assembled forming a shallow member with perimetrical ange and adapted to be pressed down upon the upwardly directed permetrical flange formed by the adjacent upwardly directed ange sections of the false-bottom panel, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
