My invention relates to new and useful improvements in watches and more particularly to an attachment for the winding and setting stem, the principal object of the in- 5 vention residing in the provision of such a device which will prevent the stem from pulling out or being disconnected from the works when setting.
A further object of the invention consists 1G in the provision of a device which will aid in keeping dirt out of the watch movement.
Nith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel de- 15 tails of construction, and arrangement of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

In some forms of watches, more particularly small wrist watches of Swiss movement, considerable trouble has been experienced by the stems being pulled out or disconnected from the works when the stem is drawn outwardly relative to the works and casing for setting the watch in the usual manner. In

I have illustrated my invention as applied to a wrist watch which includes a casing J1 formed of the top and bottom sections 1 and 2 respectively and the works 3 which are normally adapted to be received in the bottom 2 and held in position by the top 1 in the usual manner. The top is hinged to the bottom, at
one end, by the hinge 4t and when the works are to be bodily removed, from the casing, the top orcover 1 will be raised into the position shown in Fig. 5. The top or cover 1 has the usual glass crystal through which the vent the accidental pulling out of the stem,
or disconnecting thereof from the works, I provide a relatively thin plate 8 which is adapted to be positioned upon the stem in the manner shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, and to be positioned between the outer edge of the works 3 and the inner face of the casing as shown more particularly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The plate 8 has a central opening 9 through which the reduced portion 10 of the stem passes and the portion of the plate surrounding the opening 9 is concavo-convex as shown at 11 for a purpose which will be presently brought out. The reducing of the stem at 10 forms the shoulder 12 and the beveled shoulder 13, the convex portion or outer portion of the plate around the opening 9 normally engaging the shoulder 12 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. V'Vhen the stem is withdrawn or moved outwardly relative to the works and casing, for setting, the beveled portion 13 will enter the concaved portion of the plate around the opening 9, this concavo-convex portion 11 of the plate cooperating with the beveled shoulder 13 to allow sufficient withdrawal of the stem to assume the position for setting the watch. The bottom 2 has a notch 14 formed in its upper edge to receive the stem.
From the above detailed description it is i thought that the advantages of my attachment will be clearly understood. As the plate 8 is positioned between the edge of the works and the inner face of the casing it will limit the outward movement or withdrawal of the stem and prevent the same from being pulled away or disconnected from the works. VV'hen the stem is pushed inwardly to its normal position the convex portion of the plate around the opening 9 will engage the shoulder 12 and when the stem is drawn outwardly V for setting the shoulder 13 will engage in the concaved portion of the plate around the opening. It can be understood that by having the concave-convex portion around the opening 9 and the face of the shoulder 13 beveled that the stem may have a somewhat greater outward movement than if the plate was entirely flat and the bevel of'the shoulder was not provided. While primarily intended for limiting the movement of the stem the plate will have the added advantage and object of aiding in preventing dirt or other foreign matter from entering around the stem.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A watch including a casing having an opening in the side thereof, removable works received in the casing, said works including a slidable stem operable through theopening in the casing, and a plate carried by the stem, saidplate when the works are in the casing being positioned and held against movement between the edge of the works and the side of the casing at the point of the opening in the casing to be engaged by the slidable stem to limit the slidable movement thereof.
2. A watch including a casing having an opening in the side thereof, removable works received in the casing, said works including" a slidable stemoperable through the opening in the casing and formed with areduced portion intermediate its ends, and a vplatecarried by the stem between the shoulders formed by the reduced portion thereof, said plate having an opening through-which the stem passes and a portion around the opening 'being'concavo-conveX in form, the plate when the works are in the casing being positioned and held against movement betweenthe edge of the works and the side of the casing with the concavo-convex portion eXtending into the opening in the side of the casing to be engaged by the slidable stem to limit the movement thereof.
