IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELING-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,279, dated J une 27, 1876; application filed November 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE A. DENNIs, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cer- & tain new and useful Improvements in Travcling-Bags and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to what are denominated traveling bags, which have heretofore been made of carpet, leather, and-other flexible materials; and has for its object the construction of a traveling-bag of a character to be manufactured with facility, combining flexibility, cheapness, durability, lightness, and which shall also be water-proof.
The improved traveling-bag consists of fabric and rubber, which are combined in the process of manufacture. I
The rubber which I use in carrying out my invention is prepared in the same manner, and of about the same consistency, as that required in the manufacture of india-rubber shoes.
The mode of construction is as follows The inside lining is first folded over a form or pattern corresponding in size and shape to. that of the bag itself, and made perfectly smooth thereon, and the edges are brought together, or nearly together, but so as not to overlap, after which the rubber is applied and cemented to the lining, substantially the same as in rubber shoes.
In constructing the handle any suitable filling may be used, and the rubber drawn around and cemented thereto in the same manner as above set forth.
At one side of the body A of the bag is the usual pocket, which is covered by a flap, A. This flap consists of elastic material, made by cementing rubber to an elastic fabricas, for instance, a knit fabricthus dispensing with the usual elastic straps for carrying the eyelettraveling-bag, consisting of a body or coating of rubber, applied to, and strengthened by, a fabric which forms the inner lining of the bag, as set forth. 1
2. The combination, in a traveling-bag, of the outside pocket and an elastic flap, A, and a fastening device, as described.
