IMPRQVENlENT IN CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,244, dated J une 27, 1876; application filed February 14, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. WHllNEY, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriages; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents, in perspective, the body of a childs carriage with the extension-drawer partly drawn out, as when elongating the body of the carriage to form a couch. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section through the body of the carriage when elongated. Fig. 3 represents a vertical longitudinal section through the same when closed.

My invention relates to a sliding extensiondrawer, the continuous sides of which are beveled off at their rear end, in connection with the tilting seat of a childs carriage, to raise or incline it, as may be desired. It also relates to stops, located on or near the extremity of the beveled portion of the sides of the extension-drawer, in connection with the tilting seat of a childs carriage, to retain the extension-drawer in position when the body of the carriage is extended.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

Thebody of the carriage is represented at .A. It is provided with stationary arm-supports B, connected permanently to the backsupport 0. Inside of the body A is located an extension-drawer, having a bottom, D, front D, and continuous side pieces D so that the carriage can be elongated when it is desired, and yet retaiu'the form of a continuous body, closed at the sides, in which the childs toys can remain safely without danger of falling out and being lost while riding out. The side pieces D of the drawer are beveled otf at the rear end, so as to pass under the transverse bar or projection e of the tilting seat E, and lower the front of the seat by movingthe extension-drawer out, or raise the front of the seat by moving the extensiondrawer again into the body of the carriage. The rear end of the tilting seat E is nailed to the edge of a board, g, at a right angle to it, and the latter. rests on the bottom of the body of the carriage in a recess formed between the back-frame of the carriage and a stop, a, attached to the bottom of the carriage, the recess being wide enough to allow the seat to be tilted. At or near the lower The drawer is also retained in position by railings A on the sides of the body of the carriage projecting over the sides-l) of the drawer.

The carriage is generally used as shown in Fig. 3, with the top of the tilting sea-t horizontal, the-back part of it resting on the edge of the board g, and the front part hearing, by means of the transverse bar 6, upon the horizontal portion of the side pieces 1.) of the ex tension drawer; but when it is desired to transform the carriage into a couch, all that is required is to pull the extension-drawer a short distance out of the body of the carriage until arrested by the stops I). Thus extending the latter, and removing the support for the front end of the seat, it will tilt forward to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus forming a convenient couch for a child, and a continuous receptacle for his toys.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with the extension-drawer having continuous sides D beveled off at the rear end, the tilting seat of childrenscarriages, constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In combination with the tilting seat of childrens carriages, operated by the beveled end of the sides of the extension-drawer, the stops 1), located or formed on said beveled end, to retain the extension drawer in position, as described.
