NITED STATES PATENT Futon.
VIKTOR ERIKSSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BABY-CARRIAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,782, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed February 3 1897 Serial No. 621,813. (No model.)
To aZl whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VIKTOR ERIKSSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Carriages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined baby carriage and chair.
The object is to provide a device of this character which is simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and which may be easily con-' verted from a chair into a carriage, and vice versa, and which when used as a chair will occupy but small space.
With these objects in View the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combined baby carriage and chair, showing in full lines the device when used as a baby-carriage and in dotted lines the position the parts assume when used as a chair. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the carriage. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view looking toward the rear of the carriage, and Fig. 4 is a similar View through the foot extension and the platetray.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 denote, respectively, the front and rear axles of the carriage, provided with the supporting-wheels 3.
4 denotes one set of side bars, which have their rear lower ends secured to the rear axle and project forwardly, upwardly, and rearwardly to form the spring supporting-arms 5. 6 denotes the other set of side bars, which are connected to the front axle and extend upwardly and rearwardly and thence upwardly and are connected by the handle 7. At the point where these side bars cross they are connected by a pivot-bolt 8.
9 denotes the carriage-body.
10 and 11 denote two springs at each side of the body portion. The spring 10 has one end connected to an eye secured in the for- Wardly-extending end of the side piece 6 and its other end connected to a loop of a snaphook 12, while the spring 11 has its upper end connected in said loop and extends downwardly and is connected to the said sidepiece immediately above the rear axle. By this construction the rear end of the carriagebody is counterbalanced.
The side post 13 of the body portion is pivoted to the spring-arms of the side bars 4, as shown in Fig. 1, thus enabling the carriagebody to have a free swinging spring-controlled movement. The forward end or platform of the carriage-body has the rails 14 of its side pieces hinged, whereby the front section of the platform may be swung upward and over, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
WVhen in this position, the platetray 15, which has a sliding connection under this folding section and which also forms a lock-joint by reason of. its lateral rib 16 fitting in the grooves 17, is withdrawn or slid toward the back of the carriage and serves to hold plates and articles of amusement for the child when the carriage is converted into a chair. When the carriage is used in this connection, it is very desirable to shorten its length, so that it will not take up much room in the house,
and to this end I provide the side bars 6 with two spring-actuated hingearms 18, connected by a cross-rod 18' and provided with detents 19 and 20. When the device is used as acarriage, the detents l9 engage stops or staples 21, secured to the rear axle of the carriage and lock the parts in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to convert the carriage into a chair, the cross-rod is pulled up, which will cause the forward and rear supportingwheels to be drawn together, and the detent 20 will engage said staples and lock the parts in the compact position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When in this position, the body of the carriage is elevated, so as to bringit nearer in line with the table, against which the carriage maybe rolled, and the child may be watched while its parents are dining.
23 denotes the combined seat and pillow. The rear end of this seat is hinged to the carriage-body, and when used as a seat it lies approximately horizontal and is supported in this position by two spring-arms 24, having detents 25, which engage the platform of the body portion. The lower ends of these arms are provided with a rod or wire 26, by means of which the detents may be removed from engagement with the platform and the forward edge of the combined pillow and seat be allowed to lower into an inclined position and serve as a pillow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1-. In a combined baby carriage and chair, the combination with the body of the carriage having a hinged forward platform extension, of a tray located under the said extension and having a sliding engagement therewith, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined baby carriage and chair, the combination with the body portion having a hinged platform extension, the side pieces of the body and the extension being provided with grooves,of a tray having side flanges or rims engaged in said grooves, whereby a lockjoint is formed between the extension and the body portion when the device is used as a carriage, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the body portion of a carriage, of acombined seat and pillow hinged at the back of the body portion above its bottom, and provided at its forward edge with spring-arms having detents to engage the platform or floor of the body portion, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the axles and their supporting-wheels, of two sets of side-bars one set being secured to the rear axle and extending forwardly, upwardly and thence rearwardly to form sprin g-arms, and the other set secured to the forward axles and extending upwardly, rearwardly and thence upwardly and connected by a handle, said side-bars being connected by pivoted bolts at the points Where they cross each other, a carriage-body supported by the aforesaid spring-arms, counterbalancing coiled springs connecting the rear end of the carriage-body to the side-bars which carry the handle, hinge-arms secured to the last-mentioned side-bars, springs for forcing said hinge-arms rearwardly, detents secured to the said spring-arms and adapted to engage stops or staples secured to the rear axle, and a rod connecting the said hingearms, whereby either set of detents may be thrown into engagement with the stops or staples secured to the rear axle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIKTOR ERIKSSON.
