To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES DALZELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Box Attachments for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l-is a sectional view of lamp and box with filler. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a lamp and box without filler.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.

My invention relates to match-box and similar attachments for lamps; and consists in sinking the box or similar receptacle within the bowl of the lamp, where it is out of the way and does not affect the symmetry of the lamp.

Heretofore the match box or receptacle, when combined with a lamp, has usually been formed by pressing up a portion of the glass in conjunction with handle or foot, thus interfering with the symmetry of the article, and leaving the receptacle without a cover or other means of retaining and protecting the matches; and in that class of lamps formed entirely by blowing, no provision whatever has been made for combining a match-receptacle with the article.

By my method the several objections specified are obviated, and any class of lamp may be provided with a match-rece 'itacle.

I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.

A indicates a lamp-bowl, formed with the usual blow-over, which is subsequently broken away to leave an opening for the filling-orifice. This bowl is provided with the ordinary collar for attaching the burner, and, if it is desired to make use of the filling-orifice as such, then with a collar, b, upon said opening. 0 is a cylindrical box or match-safe of such diameter as is required by the size of the opening at b. This box I preferably construct by threading, as at d, or otherwise, so as to form a tightjoint with the collar of the filling-orifice, and provide it with a hinged or screw cap, 6, which both closes the box and gives the finished appearance of a cap. Said construction is adopted when the fillingorifice is to be used. When the cylindrical box is in position it will project down into the bowl of the lamp, but may be withdrawn to permit of filling the lamp as readily as the usual screwcap can be removed.

When no filling-orifice is desired the cylinder may be formed with a flange, i, (see Fig. 2,) the equivalent of the collar 1), or, if preferred, may be soldered directly to the collar, and the box permanently secured by plasterparis, or in other of the well-known ways.

The invention is equally applicable to bronze or metallic bowls, the connections of the bowl and box or safe being made in any of the ways well known to metal-workers.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with the lamp-bowl, a receptacle or matchbox sunk within the bowl, substantially as and for the purpose specified. y
