REGISTER DEVICE Filed sew. a. 1929 72711757275" ML.JECL 7 Z 757 E Am l- 7%? Patented Feb. 3, 1931 lJtLli'iZ WILLIAM L. JACOBY, OF CHICAGO, 1L ENGIS, KT
AND SUPPLY COMPANY, OF CHICiisG'Ql, ELLENOHJ, A C1-tI3QR SlVlTCElIBOAB-D 'll OF ILLINOIS REGISTER DEVICE Application filed September While the essential idea of my invention is applicable for many other uses, 1 have chosen here to exemplify its application in the case of register devices, such as used for the purpose of distant and visual communication of messages, and more particularly messages consisting of numerical figures.
Register devices of this sort as commercially used have for their essential parts an automatically operated revolving drum or indicator with figures or symbols upon its. circumference, and a screening face plate in front of it, the said face plate having an aperture in its center and permitting only one figure to be seen at a time. Experience has shown, that frequently, owing to some slight irregularity in the distribution of the figures around the circumference of the drum,
or in the construction of the device, some of the figures when the drum is rotated, may not accurately line up with the aperture of the face plate. In order to overcome this undesirable condition I have arranged a simple but an efficient device consisting oftwo eccentrically pivoted posts upon which the face plate is clamped or non-rigidly secured,
permitting through turning of the said posts around their eccentric axes to adjust the face plate to the best advantage in respect to the figures on the drum.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby a portion of a structure non-ri idly supported on two cylindrical posts may be adjusted in respect to any other portion of the said structure, or in respect to any point outside of the said structure.
For a better understanding of my invention, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention and in which like reference characters in the several views denote like parts, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the front part of the register device;
Fig. 2 is a front View of the register device with the face plate removed;
Fig. 3 is a partly sectioned view of one of the posts;
4- shows the manner in which the parts 6, less. N0. ceases.
are secured to the frame prior to the swaging of their eccentric reduced ends or pins.
Referring now more in detail to my invention. as illustrated, the register device A, comprises a face plate 2 having an aperture in the center and clamping extensions 3 bent around the posts 4. The posts 4 being secured to the top and bottom supporting plates 5 and 6 respectively by means of the pins 7 forming an integral part of the posts located eccentrically in respect to the longi tudinal axes of the said posts and passing through suitable orifices in the supporting plates 5 and 6 respectively. The protruding ends of said posts are swaged down as shown at 8, but not sufliciently to prevent the rotation of the same.
Back of the plate 2 is the rotatably mounted indicator drum 9 having the decima. digits upon its circumference and actuated by impulses from a suitable driving device, not shown in the drawing, through the instrumentality of the stepping pawl 10 and the serrated wheel 11. The said serrated wheel is secured to the axis of the drum.
In order to adjust the aperture of the face plate 2 to the best possible position in respect to the figures on the drumthe pests 4, upon which the face plate is clamped, are turned both in the same direction around their eccentric pivoting axes by means of suitable pins or other tools used as levers and thrust into the orifices 12 provided for that purpose in the posts 4. Owing to the aforesaid eccentricity of the said pivoting axes, the face plate detachably clamped upon the posts is compelled, when the posts are rotated, to move to the right or to the left in respect to the rigidly fixed axis of the drum, depending. upon the direction in which the posts are turned.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a register device it is apparent that it finds great utility when adapted to other register d vice having a movable indicator and a screening plate requiring adjustment in respect to the said indicator, therefore, I aim to cover all such changes and modifications of my invention as come (ill Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A register device of the class described provided with a rotatev le indicator drum, an adjustable screen plate provided With an aperture mounted in front of said drum, and
cylindrical eccentrically mounted posts, said posts being adjustable to move said screen plate back and forth in front of said indicator drum.
2. An indicator device provided with an indicator, a screen plate through Which portions of said indicator are visible, and means supporting s i l screen plate front of said indicator, il means eing adjustable by eccentric rotation to position said screen plate relative to said indicator.
8. An indicating device provided With an indicator, and a scre n plate mounted in front of said indicator, L means for adjusting said tive to said indicator.
4;. A structure of the character described including a mounting frame, an indicator carried thereby, a plate provided 'ith an orilice secured to said mounting frame, and eccentric rotating means for adjusting said plate relative to said indicator.
5. A structure of the character described including an indicator, a pair of supporting members associated With said indicator, a face plate attached to said supporting members, said supporting members being eccentrically rotatable to adjust said face plate relative to said indicator.
6. A structure of the character described including a supporting frame, an indicator supported by said frame, a pair of cylindrical posts supported by said frame, and a face plate attached to said posts, said posts being screen plate relarotatable to move said face plate relative to said indicator.
7. A. structure of the character described including a rotatable indicator, a pair of parallel cylindrical members, a. face plate supported by said members, said members being pivoted eccentrically in respect to their longitudinal axes and adapted to be rotated about their axes to permit the movement of said plate in respect to said indicator to position the plate relative to the indicator.
8. A structure of the character described including a supporting structure, a movable member held by said structure, a second movable member, and adjustable means supporting said second movable member and perative by eccentric rotation to adjust said second. movable member relative to said first movable member.
9. An indicating device including a pair of supporting plates, an indicator drum r0- tatably secured between said plates, a pair Sept, 1929.
