' IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOP SETTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,047, dated J une 20, 1876, application filed December 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. NOGLE, of Knightstown, county of Henry, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stay- Bracc for Carriage-Trim min g, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of an apparatus to be 'used by carriage-trimmers, and is designed to hold the bows of the top rigidly in their proper position in relation to each other and the jointed brace-stud on the sides of the seat, and allow the trimmings to be secured thereon in a neat and rapid manner.

Figure'l represents a buggy-top, showing the position of my improved stay-brace while in the act of trimming the top. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged view of the stay-brace complete.

A represents the lower clamping device, and is formed with a hole, 0, at the bottom, and provided with the set-screw D. At the top, and near the middle, of the clamp A are lugs B B, which are drilled and tapped out to form nuts, in which the screw swivel-rod E is operated. The rod E is also provided with a thumb nut, F, just above the threaded part, to operate the screw-rod; and the upper end of the rod E is furnished with a collar, G,- above which is pivoted the swivel H, and se' cured therein by the nut J, in such a manner as to leave the swivel free to revolve and be reversible.

The swivel H is pivoted to the stay-bar-K at H, and the bar K is perforated with several series of holes, L L L, as shown. These holes are designed to be drilled close together, and are so arrai'iged at ditt'erent parts of'the bar K as to allow the bows T T T T to be secured in any desired position that may be be required, so that the jointed braces may tit on the several studs U S S after the top has been trimmed and the stay-braces K removed.

Having described the construction of my improved stay-brace, Iwill now illustrate the manner in which it is operated.

After the bows T T T T are mounted, as at P, Fig. 1, then the clamping device A is slipped onto the stud U of the seat P- by means of the hole 0; and the stay-bar Kis adjusted, as shown, with the bows T properly spaced and adjusted, with the bows T and T in their proper relation to each other and the stud U, to receive the ordinary jointed side braces on the pivots U S S. Then the setscrew D is made fast, and the tap is ready for the trimmings, which can then be readily attached, as shown at 0 and R. After the trimmings are all on, then thestay-braces are removed from each side of the bows, and the jointed side braces placed on the studs U S S", in the ordinary manner.

I What I claim as new, Letters Patent, is-

1. The piece A, formed so as to clamp on the stud U, and provided with lugs B B, in which the screw-rod E operates, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose described.

3. The bar K, pivoted to the swivel H, and operated in connection with the bows T T T T, screw-rod E, clamp A, and stud U, to adjust and hold rigidly the bows while being trimmed, substantially as set forth and described.
