SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,006, dated December 25, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANSON SEARLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newar i, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Vhip Socket and Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to whipsocket-s and the fasteners attaching the saine to a carriage; and it consists vin the construction of a whipsocket barrel and a lining that holds a series of springs through which the whip is properly inserted, held, and withdrawn; also, in the combination of a jaw pivoted to one end of a band that passes partly around the socket and is attached to a stationary jaw. The latter may also be adjustably attached to the band, by which the fastener may be adjusted to sockets of varying diameters and by the 'pivoted jaw to dash-rails of different sizes, all as herein more fully described.

The barrel A, preferably made of sheet meta-l, wood, or like material, is provided with a groove, J, internally at or near the top, and a wood bottom, a, preferably cone form internally. This bottom a and barrel A may be made in one piece of wood or other suitable material. The bottom is provided with a hole, c, through which the lin ing B passes and leaves an opening for the escape of dust or water.
The lining B, preferably of leather or other suitable material, is eut about the form shown to fit the interior of the barrel A and turn over at the top, as shown at 71, and under at the bottom, as shown at. L'. vIt is provided with pockets f, that receive and hold the bottoms e of springs C. These pockets tare formed by cutting a flap out, turning it up from the hole l), and attaching or sewing them down to the lining', as shown by stitches d, or by any well-known means, leaving space to receive the form shown, and the bottoms c inserted in pockets k, while the tops M are inserted in the groove J.
The lining B, made in tubular form, and pockets k formed thereon, has springs C inserted in pockets 7c, and is then passed into the barrel A. The parts "L" are drawn through hole c and fastened at 'L' by any well-known means. The top of lining B is then turned over and pasted to or otherwise fastened to the outside of the top of barrel A.
It will be observed that the lining B is held from displacement when the whip isr withdrawn by the fastened points i and springs C; also, that the springs C are held up by the pockets L'. and held down by ends M engaging in groove J and laterally by the lining B, as shown in Fig. 4.
The springs C are held by the lining B with pockets le' and the groove J. They maybe attached at c to the lining B by other wellknown equi\'fal ent means, and thereby be held from slipping down. By these means I am enabled to combine the three parts in a simple and efficient manner, in which any whip may be inserted, held, or withdrawn without mari-ing it or inju ring the parts, each part acting with the others to produce the result.
The fasteners, Fig. 5, are applied (one or more) to any socket at any part of the barrel A, and are composed of a band, l),provided with a series of holes at n at one end, into which the serew-tlneaded jaw F is buckled or attached. By these holes 'n the fastener may be lengthened or shortened, so that only one size of fastener may be adjusted to sockets of all diameters in general use. The other end of the band D passes through a loop in the jaw E, as shown, thereby Vforming a hinge or pivot at P, on which jaw E may be swung sufficiently to adjust to all widths or thicknesses of dash-rails in common use. The construction of hinge P may be modified Vas desired to perform this function, yet be an equivalent.
The screw Q may pass through jaw F and engage in a threaded nut and produce the saine result. To make the threaded hole in a separate piece or nut I hold to be equivalent to the threaded hole in jaw F.
The fastener is operated by adjusting it by IOO holes n` to the proper lengths to (it the socket :md attached thereto by screw Q, which is then run beek. until the jaw E opens on its pivot P far enough nt r to udniitthe dashritil. The serew (.2 is then tightened until the jaws firmlyv elnbrzlee the dash-rail, and the bund I) is iirnlly drawn on the socket.
By this means I produce zt fastener that is remlilv adjusted to drip-sockets of varying E diameters. The jaws also adj ust to the dashrziil. One serew only to earch fastener 'is used, und ull the advantages of the vise and band fasteners :tre eoinbinml in n nem', ei'iieient, :1nd durable device.
