lllviPRovEMEN'r |N HAV AND cori-QN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 179,045, dated J une 20, 1876; application filed June s,- 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. NASH, ot' Canal Fulton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Press for Hay, Cotton, Vool, Hops, 8vo., ot' which the following is a specification:
' Figure l represents a perspective lview of the press. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section'of the same. Fig.` 3 represents a transverse vertical section through the lower portion of thesame. Fig. 4 represents a perspective View of the main operating sprocket cam-wheel. detached from the press. Fig. 5 represents in perspective the double wedge used to release the lifting-pawls from contact with the central rod.
The object ot' my invention is to furnish, for the useof farmers, cotton-planters, and others, a powerful press, by which hayvcotton, or other material can be rapidly and closely packed. rlhe construction ot' the press being a simple one, allows the same to be built for less cost than other more comp'licated presses.
My invention relates to the manner in which the platen is raised up against the material that is to be pressed, by means of .a central vrod elevated by griping-pawls operated by a lifter bar or yoke traveling up and down over the edge ot' a sprocket cam-wheel; also to a retaining-pawl in connection with the central rod; also, to the manner in which the yoke and camswheel are provided with friction-rollers to support them, and in the manner in which said cam-wheel is journaled;' also, to
the manner in which the cam-wheel is operated by a chain and power-Wheel through a rotating lever, 'all as will now be more specit ically set forth.
In the drawings, the frame of the press is represented at A. It forms a rectangular box, in which the material to bepressed is introduced from above. The upper part ot' the press is hinged to the frame A at a, so that it can be readily opened for the removal of the bale that has been pressed. This upper part is formed ot' the two end pieces B, and two doors, B', made of slats, connected to the end pieces B by hooks b. The top ofthe press C is also made of slats, for the convenient introduction ot the tie-bands around the bale.. `The slats are united above to longitudinal pieces c, and a central beam, C', that projects over the ends ot' the press. The top C ot' the press is provided with bars or stripsc', projecting' over the end pieces B, to keep them from spreading apart under the pressure ex-.
It isalso hinged at a' to one tralrod, e, by which it isA forced upward by two lit'ting-pawls, f, that embrace andimpinge against the sides of the said .rod e. Each of the lit'ting-pawls f rests upon a vertical projection of different height ot' the lifter-bar orV yoke G. This yokes provided witli'frictionrollers h, that travel upon the edge of a rotatf ing sprocket cam-\vheel, H, mounted upon a central bearing, I, and supported by frictionrollers t', located in boxes "upon the lower portions of the frame ot' the press. The central opening in the yoke G and bearing I are slightly larger than the rod c, so as to allow it to move freely up and down. To keep the yoke from rotating under impulse otl the camwheel H, it is extended so that its extremities engage in vertical slots ot the guides J, the
cam-wheel being provided with two inclined planes upon its periphery, one opposite tothe other, so that the yoke remains at all times level. While the yoke and lifting-pawls f descend for a new gripe upon the lifting-rod e, it is retained to the height previously reached, by the retaining-pawl K, pivoted to the frame at k. The lifting orcam wheel H is rotated by means of an endless cable-chain, L, passy ing around it and around a power-wheel, M, pivoted to an adjustable slide, n, mounted upon a horizontal frame, A', the wheel M being in its turn rotated by a sweep or lever, m.
`To operate with this press, it is placed over a pit, which permits the descent ot' the platenbar, c, which passes through the eye ot' each lifting-pawl, through the yoke, and through the central bearing of the cam-wheel, and also through the eye of the retaining-pawl. The
platen having beenlowered, the pressis filled i from above, `and the top Gireplaced above it, and secured by the links d. `The power-wheel is rotated, and through it and the chain L, the lifting; camnvheel is rotated. The friction-rollers h ofthe yoke, following the inclined planes ofthe cam, lift the yoke andthe pavvlsfthat inipinge against therod` `@lifting the lat` ter until thehighest point of the cani is t e. Then the operator places his foot on the outer end of the retaining-pawl, tips it, and
the lifting-rod and platen descend by their` own gravity to a-proper `position for refilling the press.
In a fullfsize machine thesprocket `powerwheel, the chain, and the lower part of the` lifting-cani are covered with planking, under which the chain runs, and is entirely protected from the horses feet.` v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is y 1. In combination with the platen of a press, and its carrying and sustaining rod, the griping-pawlsf, operated by a yoke, G, `substantally as and for the purposes described.
2; In combinationavith the rod yokeG, and pawl f, the vertical., projectionsgof une quai height to operate the` pa\vls,one above the other, substantially asdescribed. n
43. Incombination with the rod e and yokel G, having friction-rollers h, the-sprocket-Wheel H, having two` inclined` planes `formed upon the edge tolift the iyoke,-s,ubstantially`as `det scribed.
. 4. In combination with the cam-whee1 H l l and rodi e,1the1 central collar-bearingl, and friction-rollers i, located in the same vertical plane as the rollers h, substantially asset` i forth 5. In combinationwith the cani-Wheel` Hp operating;A substantially as described, the power-wheel M, and chainL, located in the same horizontal plane as thecamfwheel ll,substa1b` v tially as and-for the purposes set` forth.
6. In combination.withthe` rod "e andlliftg ing-pawls f, operated bythe `yoke 1G,` the retainingpawl substantially las described.
7. In combinationwith the yoke,,(`},icarxy`"` ing the lifting-pawls fand the'` calnwheelH, the friction-rollersh, travelingupon the edge t of said cana-substantially as and for thepur-v.
poses described.
