Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 24, 1912. Serial No. 679,555.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK B. CRAMER, of Bascom, in the county of Seneca and in the State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Baling Presses, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and thoroughly efficient press for baling paper and other material, and to this end the invention consists in the baling press constructed substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a press embodying the invention; Fig. 2 a vertical section from side to side of the upper and lower parts of the press; and Fig. 3 a section on the line 38 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated in the drawings, the press comprises a vertical box or chamber 10 resting upon a base 11 that includes several sills 12, the front of the box consisting of two hinged sections or doors 13, one above the other, and each having its latch device 14, the upper door being the smaller one and being used when the loose material is placed in the box for baling, and the lower door being used when the baled material is to be removed from the press. lVithin the box or chamber is a vertically movable follower 15 composed of a number of parallel slats and a central cross bar running from side to side of the chamber on the upper side of the slats. Near each end ofthe follower cross bar is attached one end of a rope 16 which thence fastens to a pulley 17 to which the other end of the rope is fastened, which pulleys 17 are fixed to a horizontal shaft 18 journaled to revolve in bearings at its ends in the side walls of the box or chamber, and at midlength said shaft has attached to it one end of a heavy spiral sprin 19 whose other end is attached to the top of the box or chamber, the spring being strong enough to revolve the shaft and pulleys and to draw the plunger or follower upward to the top of the baling chamber after a baling operation which is effected by the descentof the follower or plunger accomplished by the mechanism presently to be described. Also attached to the cross rail or bar of the follower or plunger 14:, and extending downward therefrom at the opposite sides thereof, are two ropes 20, prefer ably of wire, that are attached, respectively,
to spools or pulleys 21 on a transverse shaft- 22 beneath the bottom of the box or chamber and journaled in beatings in the outer base sills. Upon one of the projecting ends of said shaft is fixed a ratchet wheel 23 which is straddled by the lower end of a pawl carrying lever 2st by the vibration of which the shaft may be revolved, and the ropes 2O wound on their respective pulleys and thereby the plunger or follower drawn downward into the baling chamber to form the loose material therein into the desired bale. A dog or detent 25 coacts with the teeth of the ratchet wheel to prevent the ascent of the plunger or follower under the action of the spiral spring 19, but when it is desired that the follower shall ascend, it is necessary merely to disengage the dog or de tent of the ratchet wheel, whereupon automatically the follower or plunger will be lifted. The opposite ends of the follower cross bars extend. into vertical slots in the side walls of the baling box or chamber, and. thereby the follower 0r plunger is kept in proper position within the chamber and caused to move vertically therein, and the same slots accommodate the ropes 20 so that they pass vertically without having contact wit-h the material to be baled. The upper portion of each rope is carried through a hole 26 near the end of the follower cross bar and thence across the top of the latter through a pair of eyes 27, and beyond one of the eyes a block 28 is securely fastened to the adjacent portion of both ropes so as thereby to attach the same to the follower or plunger. The spools or pulleys in order to cause the rope to run smoothly, are pro vided with a spiral groove as shown.
It will be evident that the press embodying this invention is simple of construction, is powerful, yet can be easily operated, there are no parts to get out of order and lts operation is easy and convenient.
Instead of a spiral spring for rotating the shaft for lifting the plunger, I contemplate using either a coil spring or a motor spring.
Having thus described my invention what- I claim is 1. In a baling press, the combination of a box or chamber, a follower or plunger vertically movable within the box, means to.
move the follower or plunger downwardly through the chamber, a shaft above the follower or plunger, pulleys on the shaft, flexible connections from the pulleys to the folloWer, and a'spiral' spring coiled around the shaft and attached thereto at one end and connected at the other end to the box.
2. In a baling press, the combination of a box or chamber, a follower or plunger vertically movable within the box, a spring actuated shaftabovethe follower or plunger acting automatically to lift the same, a Windlass at the bottom of the press, ropes extending from the Windlass through slots in opposite sides of the box and passing through holes in the plunger to the top thereof and across the top of the plunger through eyes thereon, and a block secured to adjacent portions of both ropes.
3. In a baling press, the combination of a box or chamber, a follower or plunger vertically movable Within the box, a shaft beneath the bottom of the box, pulleys on the shaft, flexible connections extending from the pulleys to the follower, said flexible connections passing through slots in the box pulleys on the shaft, flexible connections from the pulleys to the follower, and a spiral spring coiled around the shaft and attached thereto at one end and connected at the other end to the box.

In a baling press, the combination of a baling chamber, a plunger movable vertically therein, a Windlass for moving the plunger in the direction for forming a bale, a shaft, pulleys on the shaft, flexible connections between the pulley and the plunger, and a spring applied to the shaft for retracting the plunger after a baling operation.
