Description

BLAST FURNACE TUYRE I Filed July 11. 1929 WWW/#W WWW Patented Jan. 20, 1931 v UNITED STATES ERNEST H. I'IOLZWOETH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK BLAST-FURNACE TUYEBE Application filed July 11,
This invention relates to improvements in blast furnace tuyres.
Its object is the provision of a tuyre oi this character which has been designed to reduce burning thereof to a minimum by continuously agitating the materials in the furnace adjacent the tuyre and thereby pre Venting pools of molten metal orming edjscent to the tuyre and burning it.
In` the accompanying dmwingst- Figure 1 is a longitudinel section of a tuyre embodying my invention. Figure 2 is u transverse section' thereot' on line 2-2, F igure 1. Figure 3 is e horizontal section ot the tuyre taken on line 3-3, Figure 2. Figure %t is a fragmentury sectional View of a slightly modified` form ot the invention.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views. r
The numeral 10 indicates a part of the turnzce wall. in which the improved tuyre is ounted in the usual and well known merner. As is custom-aty,- the tuyre consists ot it substzntially trusto-conical body ll made ot a Copper ulloy or other appropriate ninterial and having the usual passage 12 :tor the admission ot a continuous bhst of air to the 'u'nuce, this pnssegebein connected ut its outer end with the source OI :Lir supply by a pipe 13. The tuyre body has a cooling compztrtment 14 surrounding its air passage and through which ;i fluid is circuhted by means of au inlet pipe 15 and nn outlet pipo 16. e
For the purpose ot destroying the state ot rest condition ot the molten materials which usually collect around the underside of the nose ot' the tuyre and which caus its burn- 192& Serial No. 371434.
posed radially and extends outwardly &suitable distance from the nose-edge, the same being longer theu it is Wide, with its bottom at right angles to the tuyre-axis. In the modified 'orm ot slot indicztted at 18 inFigure i, its bottom wall' is downwerdiy and i orwardly inclined. While I have shown one slot tor introducing a downward blast of air through the lower wall of the nose, it is to? be understood, that, if desired, two or more slots may be employed.
y The provision of the slot 1.7 in the bottom edge of the tuyre-nose permits ot a continuous downwerd blast oi? air directly in the materials which disburses the eddy currents usually toi-med at the nose end ot the tuyre due to the whirling motion of the main air blast introduced through the tuyrepassage 12. Furthermore, the main air blast tends to create e slight Vacuum about the nose end of the tuy`ere which acts to set up eddy Currents, these currents in turn mclting out pockets adjacent to the tuyre in which molten metal is trapped, causing the tuyre-nose to burn. The presence ot one or more slots in the tuyre, disposed as shown, acts to destroy this condition and keeps the material agitated and in constant motion with the result that the portion of the tuyere, which is subj ect to burning, is practically insulated from the molten materials and is therel'y kept from burning. i`he slot, extending to the nose edge of the tuyere, ettectuzlly permits the air blast introduced th rough it to be also directcd forwurdly to prevent the noltcn materials udhering` to the lower 'front edge of the tuyre-nose.
I claim as my invention 1. A blast furnacetuyre, comprising e body having a passage for the admission of air to the turnace above the leve?. of the molten materials therein and' an auxiliary passage comprising a forwardly-opening notch formed in thebottom side of the nose end of the tuyre-body and at the edge thereof for dehverng air under pressu'e downwardly from the first-named passage into the materials of the furnace to keep them in constant moton about the nose end of the tuyre.
2. A blast fu'nace tuyre, comprsng a body having a substantally radal notch extendng through its Wall, said notch being disposed in the bottom side of the nose end of the tuy'e and atthe edge thereo'.
