IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-TOPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,979, dated J uue 20, 1876 application filed May 24, 1876. v

To all whom it may concern:

Spinning-Tops, of which the following is a specification:

The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a glass plate on the top of a spinning-top which may be made to form an ornament to said top part by being embellished with colors or pictures placed under the glass cap, and at the same time to form a protection to the upper part of said top, when in the course of playing one top is thrown upon the other. I

In the accompanying drawing, FigureI represents a plan view, and Fig. II a section, of aspinning-top embodying my invention.

A represents the spinning-top, having a metal point, B, at the bottom, arranged in the usual manner. On the head of this top a glass plate, O, secured in a metal capsule or frame, D, is fastened in a suitable recess made in the top of this spinning-top. This glass-plateG is made smooth on its outer surface, while on its inner side it may be pro vided with suitable cavities, which are filled with color, and then covered with plaster-ofspinning-top.

While this arrangement forms an ornament for the head-of the spinning-top, it forms at the same time a protection to said head, while in the course of playing one top is thrown upon the other, when the sharp point B is likely to penetratethe head part, which, with myimprovement, is prevented, and the point B will slide off from this smooth surface 0.

Instead of attaching the glass plate 0 into a metal capsule, D, and then fastening the whole into the recess in the top made for that purpose, the glass plate 0 may be directly inserted into the recess in the top.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a spinning-top, A, having a glass plate, 0, attached to its head, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
