Description

Jan. 20, 1931. H. B. HERRING cmor: PADDLE F'i led Sept. 8. 1930 A TTORNEYS.
Patented Jami. 20, 1931 I r HORACE B. HERRING, OF TENNESSEEY;
' CANOE IP AJ JDLE Application filed September 8 930;, steam). 480,491-? p 5 packed away into a small space.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of this kind which can be quickly assembled, and when set up for use, willbe rigid and strong, andwill not rattle or vibrate.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of this kind, which has a blade foldable longitudinally, so that it can be put away into a comparatively small space.
A still further obj e'ct .ofthe present invention is to provide a device of this kind consisting of few parts, which are easily disassembled and adaptedto be packed away in a suit able case along with the other camping sup- 7 plies. v I With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully de- 1 scribed hereinafter, and will be more partic-.
ularly pointed out in the claims appended 2 hereto.
In the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a paddle constructed' according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged view partly in section with the parts of the paddle separated. a a
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a paddle with the parts knocked down ready'to bestored away.
F iguret is a detail view showing the outer ends of the paddle frame separated.
I Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 represents the shank and is provided at its inner end with a handle 11 which is adapted to fit in the palm of the hand when the paddle is being used. The outer end of the shank is provided with the reduced shoull dered port-ion 12, which is adapted to receive a ferrule 13, which is provided; with a reduced externally threaded portion, which forms a stud 14:.
An internally threaded socket 15 is provided in a coupling piece 16, and this socket body portioir21 'ofcanvasor other suitable 15i szadapt'ed or e vethe.studi i en t is.

"t eatre e d-T yme fi erew i 18 l The; filameLmemherlsiMSare' covered by a material, which is secured thereto by stitching 22 or in any other manner desired. The outer end of one of the frame'members 19 is provided with-a strap 23, which is adapted to receive the off-set tongue 24 of the other frame member to prevent the frame members from moving with respect to one another.
The outer end of one of the frame members 19 carries at its inner-side'a socket 25, which is adapted to receive a brace rod 26. This brace rod 26 lies at one side of the cover for the frames 19, andis adapted to prevent the cover from bulging outwardly when the paddle is in'use. The brace rod 26 is provided atits inner endwith an arm 27, which is adapted to be received in a socket 28 in the coupling piece 16.
' The brace rod 26 also carries a'pair of coupling plates 29, which are secured to the rod by a ring 30, or other suitable means. The frame members 19 also carrythe' inwardly and augularly extending brace rods'31, which have the tongues 32, which are adapted to be received into sockets 33 in the coupling plates stud 14 is threaded into the socket 15, and the arms 20 of the frames 19 are expanded until they register with the slots 17 in the coupling piece 16, whereu on they are slidably insertedinto the slots 1. and the set screws 18 are then screwed against these arms 20, so as to retain theblade rigidly and securely to the l coupling piece.
The arm 27 is also inserted into the socket 28 of the coupling piece. The blade is held in extended position by the brace arms131, which are connected to the brace rod 26 through the coupling plates 29.
It will be obvious that various changes might be made in the construction, combination and arrangement ofparts, which could be usedwithout departing from the spiritof my invention, and I do not mean to limit the invention to such details, except, as particularly'pointed, outv in the claims.,;-.
Havingthus described my, lnventlon, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A paddle comprising a shank, a blade consisting of a pair of frame members havingtheir outer'ends overlapping, means for releasably holding the outer ends of the frame members together, and a coupling piece for connecting the shank and blade together.
2. A paddle comprisinga, shank, a blade consisting, of a pair of frame members having'their outer ends overlapping, means for securing'the outer endsof the frames together,
I a brace rod carried by the outer end ofone of the frame members, coupling plates carried by said brace rod, and brace arms carried by the frame members, their free ends adapted to be received by the coupling plates.
