IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,890, dated June 20, 1876; application filed November 16, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, HENRY L. VESTAL, of Knightstown, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:

In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, of the framelever.

The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.

A is the tub standing upon legs and intended to receive the clothes and water. Within this is a concave, B, composed of a series of bars fluted on their upper faces and supported upon the segmental end pieces.

This concave is supported upon the inclined sides of the tub, havlng a water-space below Over this is suspended the quadrant-termed rubber G, composed of two end pieces connected by the bars 0 and supporting the fluted rollers 0 The braces C) connect the end pieces with the shaft D, which has its journals supported upon the suspended boxes E, which are hung between the side pieces of the frame F, from rods fastened to the adjustable cross- .head G. This is suspended upon a screw, H,

passing through the nut in the top of the frame and actuated by a crank, by means of .relation to the concave as the quantity of clothes under treatment may require. The rods which suspend the boXesE hang by their heads from the cross-piece G, so as to permit the rubber to rise independently of the latter. A spiral spring, I, surrounds each of these rods, and presses down on the boxes so as to give a yielding pressure to the clothes. Motion is communicated to the oscillating rubber by means of a framed lever, L, the ends of which are slid into recesses in the U-formed piece K, fastened to the braces 0 When desired, the rubber 0 may be swung up and supported upon the hinged bar M, which is pivoted on the top of the tub.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination, the concave B, the oscillating rubber O, and fluted rolls, and shaft D, suspended boxes E, and adjustable cross-head G, whereby the pressure of the rubber may be adjusted, and atthe same time allowed to rise independently, substantially as set forth.
