Patented Jan. 6, 1 931 sr' rs j-re erres 4 COVER FOR BINDERS Application filed September 3, 1529, Serial at. 390,070, andin canaaa March 21,192a';
ihe present invention pertains to a novel cover for a binder machine of the type embodying a reel, a platform and elevators on the platform. 1 The primary object of the invention is to provide a cover of this character adapted to bedrawn over the elevators. in order to protect the same and the mechanism comprised therein.
The device of the invention includes essentially a sheet of covering material, such as canvas, having one end secured to a spring tension roller. This roller is preferablysupe ported one end of the platform by being ournalled between'the side frame members of the upper elevator. In idle condition, the
7 covering member is wound on the roller, but
in service is withdrawn therefrom and has its free endsuitably attached to the opposite end of the platfori The invention is fully disclosed by wayof example in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of abinder, showing; the device of theinvention applied thereto Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cover igure 3 is a sectional view of the spring tension roller and the side framevmembers Cari Q; the same; I V
Figure e is a section on the line'4.4= of Figure 1, and Figure 5, is a detail section of the cover. 1
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout. in Figure 1 is illustrated an agricultural hinder, the essential parts of which are, the reel 1, the platform 2, the lower elevator 3, and the upper elevator 4. It will be seen that the latter is disposed between a pair of side frame members 5 and 6 which are fixed with reference to the machine. This construction is now in use and is known on the market as the McCormick binder.
To the inner faces of the members 5 and 6 at the upper ends thereof, are attached brackets, 7 and8 respectively. A rod 9 is supported in the brackets, having one end 10 journalled in the member 8 and a square end 11 mounted in the bracket 7. On the rod 9 is rotatably supported a roller 12 having arecess 13 at one end. The recess contains a tension spring 141 coiled around the rod, with one end 15' fixed to theroller'and the other end 16 fixed to the end 11 of the rod 9. V V v r Tothe roller-12 is attached a sheet ofsuitable covering and protecting 'material "17 adapted to be wound uponthe roller by the action of the spring 14 thereing This'sheet is of a two-ply character, as indicated bythe numerals 18 and 19 in-- Figure 5, and is reinforced at intervals by transverse strips or .bars 20, disposed between the'plies.
Innse, the coveringsheet 'is'fdrawnout over: the platform 2 by means of a string21:
carries a series of hooks 22 adapted to engage the corresponding end of the platform, there by'holding'the sheet in its drawn outcon'die tion against the tension of the spring 14. Obviously, when the hooks are released from the platform, the cover will be drawn up on the roller 12, jby'the action of the spring 14;
The sheet'17 is passed beneath a transverse frame member23 of the binder machine, serving ordinarily to support-the seat '24) The cover is held spaced from the member 23'and is permitted to pass freely beneath the same by means of wire shoes 25 carried by "the transverse member and presenting curved portions 26 to the upper surface of the sheet.
Inasmuch as the upper elevator confined between the side members 5 and 6 is narrower than the lower elevator 8, and the sheet 17 on the roller12 is in turn narrower than the upper elevator, I provide auxiliary means for covering the margins of the lower elevator. This means consists of angle bars 27'secured to the outer faces of the side frame members 5 and 6 and extending along the longitudinal l edges of the platform, thereby constituting 'SldQ SlllGlClS for the margins of the lower and fat the free end of the sheet. This end also 7 Having thus fully disclosed my invention, What I. claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. In combination with a binder including a reel, a platform adjacent said reel, and v elevators on said platform; a spring tension roller at one end of said platform, a cover for said platform having one. end attached to said roller, means at the other end of said cover for attachment to the remaining end Vofsaid platform, and transverse rein-forc ing strips secured to saidcover. 7 i
a 2, In'combination with a binder'incl'ud'ing a reel, aplatform adjacent-said reel,. upper and lower elevators on said platform, the upper elevator being narrower than the lower elevator and having side frame members;
aid-tension rollersupported by said frame members, a cover: attached to said roller and adapted to be drawn over said elevators, and shields secured to said frame members and extending over the margins of said lower elevator.
3. In combination with a binder including a reel, a platform adjacent said reel, and elevators onsa-idrplatform; a cover attached to one end of said platform and having means for-attachment to the other end of the plat form, a transverse fraine member over said elevators, and spacer shoes carried-by sald. 'member, and adapted to engage said cover.
4. In combination with a binder including a reel, a platform adjacent said reel, upper and lowerv elevators on said platform, the
upper elevator being narrower than the lower elevator and having sideflframe members; a tension rollersupported by said frame members, a cover attached to said rollerand adapted to be drawn over said elevators, shields secured to said: frame members and extending over the margins of said lower elevator, and
transverse reinforcingstrips secured to said cover.
I r In witness whereof I have hereunto set my? hand.
