1 This invention relates toelectric light fixtures' of the bra'cket'type and is designed to supply a novel and improved bracket having,
among others, the advantages hereinafter I claimed and described.
The bracket is especially adapted for use in hospitals andsick rooms where it is re Fig. 4, a cross-sectional detail in the direction of the arrow on the line 44, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a horizontal section on an enlarged scale on the line 5, Fig. 3; and Fig.6, an enlarged detail vertical section .of the washer comprising part-of theuniversal bracket mounting.
Referring first to Figs. 2, 3, my novel fixture comprises a housing 1 as of sheet metal, adapted to be set into the wall of the room and provided with a front cover plate 2 secured to the frame a by screws 3.
Within the housing 1 is a rectangular frame a comprising topand bottom members 4, 5 respectively, connected by upright corner members 6. The front members 6, Figs.
2, 3, 4, have flanges? through which extend the screws 8 into the housing.
Between the top and bottom plates 4, 5, Figs. 2, 3,4, extends, one on each side, arail 9, on which travels a carriage 10, which carries a reel 11 for the current cord or wire 12, and the bracket 13. This bracket, Fig. 3, has a reduced end 15 which fits snugly passage 16 in a ball 17 held movably against its seat on the end of an outwardly extended neck 18 of the carriage. casting 10, by a threaded ring 19. This ring permits free universal movement of the ball 17 on its seat without loosening the ring, through the presence of a washer 20 locked to the neck 18 by said ring 19 and by two pins 21 on the neck entering holes therefor in the washer 20. The carriage 10, Fig. 4, has a vertical rib or gro0ve 23 in therail 9.

flange '22 on each side whi ch travels i The reel 11, Figs. 2, 3, 4,is mounted on an axle 25 in the carriage 10 and is provided interiorly wit-ha coiled spring, not shown, for automatically winding up the cord 12 thereon. The cord 12 from the socket 28 on the bracket or arm "l3-is' carried through the ball 17 and wound upon thereel 11 and connected thereto to include it in the circuit. From the terminals 26, Fig. 4, on the carriage 10 extend forked finger contact members27 inwardly and on either side of the shaft 25 and; against thefends of -the reel 11. From the insulated. terminals 26, Figs. 4, '5, on the carriage .10, cords 30, shown broken away,
run -to:terminals31,-32 on the top member 4. 1 Fromthe terminals 31', 33, .run the power lines 34, 35, to any suitable sourceof supply, as a convenient socket in the wall, not shown. For convenient operativecontrol, Fig. 5, lines 36,37, run from the terminals 32, 33,'to' a switch 37', Figs: 1, 2, '3, on the bar '38 ofthe frame and extending through the front The innerfaces ofthe corner members 6, andtop and'bottom members 4, 5,'are grooved at"39,Fi'gs. 3, 4, to receive a flexible'strip of metal or other suitablematerial'40 through. which the neck 18of'tlie carriage 10 extends, the strip acting to form a. cover forthe opening i'n'the front plate 2 at all-times by slid ingin its groove as the-carriage 10 and its neck 18 is moved up or down- For use the housing isinst'alled in the side wall of the room at such height that the bracket or arm 13 will support the light bulb conveniently for use 5 a Of course further adjustment of the bracket can be made either up' or down as desired. If more convenient, as for moving it around in the room, the arm 13 may be" rendered portable'and may be withdrawn from its ball'socketl? and the cord unreeled to: such length as desired, dotted 1ines,Fig-. 2. The arm may be locked in any desiredans 'ular position in the ball 17 by turning up the ring 19on the neck 18'. The cord allows the carriage 10-to be raised or lowered as desired. The free movement of :the-ball I mental and prone to seek and find anything 17 permits the cord 12 to unwind or wind itself up smoothly on thereel 24 as the latter rotates.
The carriage 10 being mounted on the rear corner members 6, a firm support is provided, all weight of the carriage is borne by said rear members with notendency to spring the ma erials frame outwardly; .TheE-reel movingwith the carriage there is but little slack permitted in the c0rd 12; I H g The foregoing described" fikture is partic ularly useful in hospitals and sick roomsforj children and those suffering from nervous troubles. Such invalids arevery -temperain the room" that'can bemoved or playedwith; They remove the bulbs, try'tmturnor-move V the ibracketsryandi cut the cords. Asidetfrom v V the possible serious resultsithatunayifollovv such. handling of theffixtures, o etc, the: incon-' venlence arising frompminor troublesis annoying; l
- By. the use' of: such 2a" fixturea as; described, the cord is hiddeni'from view "when notiin use, the fixture maybeiplacedsufficiently high on r the Wallto:- be normally J beyond reach of the patient. and yet "accessible-to the nurse or attendants" g I-y r It is sanitary: and=it offers little opportunity "for dust'to'collect on thefcord an'd later to be scattered in'the room. 2
My invention is not restricted to the par ticular :emb'odime'nt ithereof described and illustrated. g v Claims: I 1. YA lampwall fiush lightingfixture comtended through said frame and a universally mounted bracket thereon, including a socket onthe neck member, a ball therein, a locking Washer nonrotatable on the socket and a locking ring threaded to the neck over the washer.
