My invention-relates'to hookholders,and more particularly to a device adapted to be fixed toa support and. to; a-bookto secure the book to the support andpermit of ready opening and closing of the book. T

1 Physical embodiments of my invention are especially adapted to'usein connection with books of reference,vsuch as-telephone directories and the like, in public places where it 19 is desirable to lock the books in place to prevent their unauthorized removal and at the same time permit the books to beeasily and conveniently openedand closed. Another object of my presentinvention is to provide a locking holderfor a book which will maintain the book at all times ineither of only two positions, first, the normally closed position, and secondly the open posi tion, andwhich will prevent any displace- 20 mentof the bookeXcepta-minimumrelative I movement of the book and the support necessary to allow manipulation of the book. from its closed to its open'conditiomandviceversa.

A further object is to provide a device of the characterindicated which comprises. a member secured to .a supportand another member fixed to the book, thetwo members being associated" in hinged relation to allow the book'to be opened and closed.

Another object is to provide means in the holder to support the-book, when 0 ened, in such a position that-the book may e 'ma-intained openiat any page and in such a way that the page at which the book is-opened may be easily andconvenientlyread.

Another objectis to provide'a book holder having all theforegoing and other advantages which. will. be simple, efficient and durable in construction and which may heeco- 40 nomically manufactured from a minimum'of stamped sheet metal parts. a

' Further objects and advantages of my invention will be evident froma consideration of theaccompanying drawings and the description hereinafter of the invention in one preferredform of embodiment.

Referring now to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates any suitable base i or support, and 2 indicates the'side cover of a book. The support may be vertical, such as a wall, the side of a telephone booth or-the like, ormaybe disposed ina horizontal or inclined plane, such as the top of a desk,table,

book stand, "etc, and may be formed of -any well knownwall or furniture material. Similarly, the book cover 2 may be of any size, material and construction, but is preferably :a relatively stiff cover formed of boards.

For the purposes of illustrating my present invention in one form of embodiment Ihave shown in the drawingsabinder or supple mental cover detachably associated with a' book by means-of a book support made according to theteachings .of United States Letters Patent No. 1,737,178,, issued to me on November 26,1929. p

My present invention contemplates a pair of members 3, which will be hereinafter shown in the drawings, or if desired, the connection maybe effected through the medium of an intermediate supportpivotally associated with the support 1 to enable the closed book to be swung to and from parallel contacting relation with a wall. A convenient way of effecting connection between the members 3 and the support 1 consists in providing one end of each of the members with an angularly bent flange portion 5, apertured to receive screws, nails or the like; but it is to be understood that any effective type of connection is ;to be considered within the scope of my invention. like manner, the

members 4, which consist essentially of plates extending outwardly from the side .covers of the book, may be securedto thebook'by any convenient means, such for example, as that shown in the drawings,where the members 4 are provided with integral lateral extensionsfi through which rivets or the like 7 are passed to fix the same firmly to the cover. This expedient is especially desirable since besides efi'ecting connection between the cover 2and the members 4, the extensions 6 aperture in the form of a slot 10 of a width and length just sufficient to receive the guide portion '8 of the support member, but insufiicient to permit passage of the enlarged ear 9.

In assembling the elements of my present invention" which have just been described, the members are associated in a 'manner which will be evident from" Fig. 1 of the drawings, i. e., a pair of cover members 4 are first applied to the opposite side covers of a book, (preferablyabout midway betweenthe top an bottom, so that they extend from the cover adjacent to and parallel with the back of the book. The support contacting portion 5 of each'one of a pair of support members 3 is then passed through theslot 1O of each of the book. members 4 and fed through the slot until the guide portion 8 is received in the slot. With the book closed, as shown in Fig. 2, and the pair of guideportions disposed in substantial parallelism, the flanges 5 of the support members are secured to the support. The device is then in operative applied position. Its method of use and operation is as follows:

When not in use the book is closed,-as

- shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and pushed back between the guide portions 8 so that its back is disposed parallel with and adjacent to the 1 surface of the support and both its covers are 1 port member. When the limit of its movement is reached the book is opened, assumingthe position shown in Figs. 1 and 3,

H In order to cause the book to be disposed at such an angle whenopened as will afford the maximum of convenience for reading, I prefer to form the ears '9 in non-parallel relation with the plane of the support, as best shown in Fig. 2. This maybe accomplished by making the sides of the guide portions 8 non-vertical to the support, or by forming the'line of the bend in the support member between the guide portion 8 and the ear 9 at an acute angle to the axis of the guide portion, or by a combination of both expedients. It should be noted that when the device is to be used with a vertical support it is desirable to dispose the guide portions 8 outwardly and upwardly at an 0blique angleto the support, for'the purpose of causing the book when. closed to be urged by its own weight well back against the support. 'I'have illustrated and described my present inventionin one preferred form of embodiment. Various modifications to meet varying conditions of use and preferences of the user willreadily suggest themselves, but all such modifications, to the extent that they embody the spirit of the invention, are to be considered within the scope and purview of theappended claims.

Having thus described my invention'what I claim and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is 1. A book holder including a pair of parallel guides secured to a support, means secured to the covers of a book and adapted to slide upon the guides when the book is closed and adapted to contact with the free ends of the guides when thebook is opened.

2. A book holder including parallel guides each having'one end secured to a support and a book supporting ear at its free end, in combination with means secured to the covers of a book adapted to slide upon the guides when the 7 book is closed and to contact. withthe book supporting ears when the book is moved to the ends of the guides and opened.

3. A book holder comprising a pair of spaced guides'having end portions adapted to be secured to a support, in combination with a pair of members secured to a book cover'having ends adjacent the back of the book slidably engaged with the guides, andmeans on the free ends of the guides and on the members respectively to limit relative movement of the guides and members.

4.. A book holder comprising a pair of spaced guides each having one end adapted to be secured to a support and having its free end extending outwardly, in combination with a pair of plates secured to the book cover each having its rear end extending outwardly and provided with an aperture through which one of the guides is received.

5. A book holder comprising a pair of members each having means at one end for engagement with a support, means at the opposite end for supporting the book inopened position, and an intermediate guide portion,

in combination with plates extending from the front and back coversof the book having slots receiving the intermediate guide portions of the members.

6. A book holder including parallel guides each having one end secured to asupport and a book supportingear at its free end of greater width than the parallel portions of the guides, in combination with means secured to the covers of a book adaptedto slide upon the guides when the book is closed and to contact relative movement of the support members and the book cover members.

A book holderaccording to claim 9, in Y which the free ends of the support members are provided with ears of greater width than i the guide portions and extending outwardly therefrom to limit relative movement of the support members and the book cover members and to support the book when opened at the outer limit of its movement.

A book holder according to claim 9, in which the free ends of the support members are provided with outwardly extending ears of greater width than the guide portions and non-parallel to the supportto limit relative with the book supporting ears when the book is moved to the ends of the guidesand opened.

A book holder including parallel guides each having one end secured to a support and a book supporting ear atits free end of greater width than the parallel portions of the guides and extending outwardly therefrom, in combination with means secured'to the covers of a book adapted to slide upon the guides when the book is closed and to contact with the book supporting ears when the book is moved to the ends of the guides and opened. I 8. A book holder including parallel guides each having one end secured to a support and a book supporting ear at its free end of greater width than the parallel portions of the guides and extending outwardly therefrom in a plane non-parallel to the plane of the support, in combination with means secured to the covers of a book adapted to slide upon the guides when the book is closedand to contact with the book supporting ears when the book is moved to the ends of the guides and opened. 9. A book holder comprising a pair of sup-. port members having guide portions, means at one end of the members adapted to be secured to a vertical support whereby the axes of the guide portions are disposed outwardly and upwardly from the support and substantially parallel with each other, in combination with members associated with the covers of a book slidably engaged with the guide p01: tions.

10. A book holder according to claim 9, in which the free ends of the supportmembers areprovided with enlargements to limit
