- In an application filed July 28, 1926, Ser. No. 125,850, now Patent 1,707,047 issued March 26, 1929, is disclosed a winding ma chine in which the rise of a member, displaceable by the accumulation of wound material, is opposed at'a diminishing rate by means of counterweights or friction wedges. The present invention seeks to accomplish the same object by means of a variable brake resistance, and it ma be used in place of the devices shown in my said earlier application or as an auxiliary in addition thereto.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is'disclosed in several concrete and preferred forms in which:

The winding means may be of widely dif ferent types but is here exemplified by drums 1 and 2. The member displaceable by the accumulation of material may be either winding shaft 3 or top pressure roll 4, but the invention is here exemplified by applying it to the top pressure roll. As here shown, the top pressure roll and its carriage 5 are carried by flexible connections 6 and counterweighting means 7, the connections passing here over sprocket wheels 8 and the counterweighting means sliding on inclined ways 9 able transmission element that rotates in re sponse to the displacement of the member,
and a variable, brake controlled by the displacement of the member to oppose rotation of the element is provided. In Figs. 1, 2
and 3, the rotatable element is represented by a pinion 10, or its shaft, mounted on carriage 5. Preferably there are two pinions one at each side of the machine and these pinions engage stationary racks 11 so that, as
member 4 becomes displaced and carriage 5 travels upwardly on guides 12, pinions 1O rotate in engagement with racks 11. 13 is a com ventional representation of a brake applied to drum 14 pinned to the shaft carrying pinion 10. Spring 15 tends to relieve pressure of the brake band and arm 16 when actuated by acam as 17 tends to increase the braking pressure. It will be understood that the greater the brake pressure, the greater the resistance to the upward displacement of member 4. It is apparent that by having differently shapedcams 17 or by adjusting said cam (as by means of slot and bolt connection 18) various resistance effects to the rise ofthe displaceable member can be produced. As here shown, cam 17 is so shaped and adjusted that the greatest resistance to rotation of elementlO occurs when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, that is, at the beginning of the winding operation. As wound material accumulates on the winding'shaft it rises, and so does thetop pres sure roller and itscarriage, and eventually arm 16 reaches a point on cam 17 where it slopesand in consequence of this the braking pressure diminishes, the result being that less and less resistance is offered to rotation of element 10 anddisplacement of member 4. I
In Fig. i is shown a modification which is merely a reversal of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Here rotatable element 10 is mounted on the framework and racks 11 are mounted on carriage 5 So likewise cam 17" is mounted to move with carriage 5*.- The operation of the parts would be the s'ameas in Fig. 3.
Iclaim: 1 1 Y 1.- In a'winding machine, a member displaceable by accumulation of wound material, and means to resist the displacement of said member including: a rotatabletransmission element that rotates in response to the displacement of the member, a variable brake I in rotatable engagement with the rack in V displaceable member, the application response to the displacement of the member, a variable brake to oppose rotation of the pinion, and means to automatically varythe pressure of the brake as movement of the displaceable member occurs.

In a winding machine, a member dis? pla'ceable by accumulation of wound material, and means to resist the displacement of said member including: a rotatable transmission element that rotates in response to the displacement of the member, a variable brake to oppose rotation of the element, and means to automatically diminish the pressure of the brake as movement ofthedisplaceable member occurs.

Ina winding machine, a member displaceable by accumulation of wound material, and means to resist the displacement of said member including: a rack, a pinion in rotatable engagement with the rack in response to the displacement of the member,a variable brake to oppose rotation .of the pinion, and means to automatically diminish the pressure of the brake as movement of the displaceable member occurs.
5. In a winding machine, a member displaceable by accumulation of wound material, and means to resist the displacement of said member including: a pinion carried by the displaceable member, a rack with which the pinion engages, a variable brake to oppose rotation of the pinion, and a cam to control, in response to the movement of the of the braking force of the brake.
6. In a Winding machine, a member displaceable by accumulation of Wound material, and means to resist the displacement of said member including: apinion carried by the displaceable member, a rack with which the pinion engages, a variable braketo oppose rotation of the pinion, and a cam to lessen, in response to the movement of the displaceable member, the application of the braking force of the brake as the member becomes displaced.

In a winding machine, a member displaceable by accumulation of wound material, fiexible connections and counterweighting means carrying said member, and means to resist the displacement of said member including: a rack, a pinion in rotatable engagement with the rack in response to the displacement of the member, a variable brake to oppose rotation of the pinion, and means to automatically diminish the pressure of the brake as movement of the displaceable member occurs.
