Thepr'esent invention relates to wheel pulling devices and has for an important object thereof the provision of a puller which is adapted to facilitate the pulling of gears or wheelsfrom shafts or the like.

Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral. 10 designates generally a frame which is preferably constructed of metal so as to provide a rigid structure. The frame 10 comprises a pair of plate members 11 which are provided at the outer end portion thereof with an outstanding lug 12.
The plate members 11 are provided with a plurality of spaced apertures 13 for swing ingly and adjustably receiving a pair of gear I clamping or engaging members 14:, the-clamping members 14 being adjustably held on the frame 10 by a removable pin or bolt 15. The gear engaging or gripping members 14 are provided at the inner ends thereof with inw'ardly extending lugs 16 which are adapted to engage upon the inner faceof the gear or wheel which it is desired to remove from a shaft.
A pair of handle members or levers 17 are swingingly mounted between the spaced lug members 12 as at 18, the inner portion of the handle member 17 being preferably bifurcated as at 19 r f A shaft engaging member 20 is slidably mounted at one end thereof'in the frame 10, and in order to facilitate the sliding or horizontal movement ofthe shaft engaging member a pair of anti-friction roller members 21 are rotatably mounted in the plate members 11 and engage against the opposite face portions of the shaft engaging member20.
The opposite face portions of the shaft engaging member are provided with a plurality of teeth 22, and a pair of gear members 23 are rotatably mounted between the lug engagement with the gear rack 22.
A swinging or rockable arm 24is swingingly mounted atone end of the shaft 25 for thegear'23 and is adapted to extend outwardly ofthe lug members 12.
A link 26 issecured atone endto the bifurcated shank 19 of the levers 17 and at the opposite end is rockably secured as at 27 to the outer end portion of the rocking lever or arm 24. V p t A pawl member 28 is swingingly positioned on the arm 24 and is adapted for engagement with the teeth of the gear 23 so that when the levers or handles 17 are pulled outwardly, the arm 24 will be coactivel v rocked and the pawl 28 will rotate the gear member 23. i A resilient spring or the like 29 is mounted onv the arm 24 and is adapted to engage the pawl member 28 for holding the pawl member in contact with the gear 23.
The pawl member 28 is preferably mounted on a shaft 30 which extends outwardly of the arm 24 and is provided at the outer end portion thereof with a lever. or outstanding member 31 so that when it is desired to release the pawl member from en agement with the gear 23, the lever 31 may be swung I laterally of the frame and against-the tension ofthe spring 29, the spring 29 being preferably constructed so that when the pawl 28 is swung out of engagement with theteeth of the gear 28, the pawl member will be held in inoperative position by the spring. The gear rack 20 maybe .provided at'the members 12 and are adapted for contacting inner end portion thereof with an axial pin or the like 32 which is preferably threadably mounted as at 33 on the inner end portion of the gear rack 20, the pin or centeriu member 32 being adapted to engage the shaft having the gear 'mountedthereon preferablyeugages in the centering hole usually formed in a shaft. 7 a
In the use of thisdevice, the clampingor gripping members let are preferably adjusted so as to engage about the periphery of the hub of the wheel or the peripheryof the gear, and the lug members 16 are adaptedtocon .tact with the inner face ,ofthe hub or gear. I. Thecentering member 32 is positioneil on theouter end portion of the shaft whereupon the levers or operating members 17 may be pulled outwardly thereby coactively rocking the pawl member 28 and rotatingthe gear members 23 so as to force the gear rack inwardly. Thepressure exerted on the gear rack 20 will force the frame 10 outwardly therebyforcing the gear or Wheel engaged betweengthe clamping members i l to move outwardly of the shaft.
The levers 17 may be rocked as desiredand the resilientspring 29 will'hold the pawl 28 mto engagement :with the teeth of the gear 1 23 'so that the desired pulling pres ur ill be maintained on the gear engaging bers 14.
It will, of course, be understood that va-' ,r1ous changes and modifications may bemade in the details of construction and design of the above specifically describedembodiment of theinvention without departing from the spirit thereof, such cha-nges'and modifica- .tions being restricted only by the scope of the followingclaims.

IA wheel puller of the character described comprising a frame, a plurality of swinging jaw members adjustably noinrted on said frame, a slidable gear rack mounted in said frame, a removable shaft engaging men'lber mounted on said gear rack, and ratchet means rockably mounted innsaid frame and adapted to move said gear rack in 'ardly thereof.
