IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,636, dated June 13,1876; application filed April 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ADAM HECKEN- BACH, of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Breech-Loading Fire-arm, 'of which the following; is a specification:
The invention consists of a movable plate in front of the breech-block, with convenience for tightening it up in a simple way, by means of which the plate can be readily taken off for making smooth and bright with emery-paper, and can be tightened up when the parts become loose .from wear without expense, and also without tools. The plate also allows of using stronger pins on which the hammer strikes.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the breech and. a portion of the barrel. Fig. 2 is a plan of the breech without the barrel. Fig. 3 is a section on line 00 w of Fig. 1.
A is the removable plate, which I attach to the breech, to be taken off for polishing, and which is fixed adjustable by screw B and nut for tightening up when the joint between the breech and the barrels works loose. The screw is applied to the center of the detachable plate, and passes through the breech.
G is the cross-block in the breech, and D the corresponding block on the barrel, to connect the barrels firmly to withstand the shock of the discharges, and prevent the side movement which results when only a small middle block is used, as in the common arrangement.
The ordinary barrel-locking pins or studs H enter the cross-block of the barrel when the latter is turned down. The disengagement of the studs is efiected in the usual manner.
E is the hook-stud on the rear end of the guard F, to be connected with the plate G by passing through it and shifting sidewise a little, to prevent the guard from opening accidentally.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the detachable and adjustable plate A, and screw B, with the breechblo ck, barrel, and firing-pin, all constructed and relatively arranged as herein shown, for the purpose set forth.
