Description
U-.I-I. ETEBRUK. Breeoh Loading; Fire Arm.
Patented July 27,1880.
PH En. wAsmNamN u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. EUTEBRCUK, oE CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,409, dated July 27, 1880.
i Application led December 3, i879.
To all whom tt may concern:
Beitknown that I, CHARLES H. EUTEEROUK, ot' Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making` a part hereof, in which- Figure lis a vertical lengthwise section, and Fig. 2 a section on line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows a part of the breech-piece in dotted lines, with the top snap and hammer in full lines.
My invention consists of a novel construction of the breech-piece of a sin gle, barreled gun, my object being to make a single-barreled breechloading gun with a central hammer and top snap in the same line, which is simple, cheap, and very compact in its construction, and yet strong and durable and not likely to get out of order.
In the drawings, A is the breech-piece. This breech-piece is slotted from top to bottom, as shown, to'receive a central hammer, B, and is also slotted across this central slot, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, to receive the locking-bolt O and its connecting-arm o2. The locking-bolt O,by which the barrel is locked in place, slides in this slot in the breech-piece A, and is moved forward and back by the tumbler c, which is actuated by the finger-lever c.
The bolt C, it will be seen, is in front ofthe central slot in the breech-piece A, and the tumblercat the rear, with the hammer B between them. Io admit of this compact arrangement I make the bolt C with a Side arm, c2, which extends back of the hammer and connects the bolt C and tumbler c. This arm is shown asa separate piece from bolt G, and is best made so for covenience in putting both in place.
There is nothing novel in these operative parts per se, and I have merely transferred them from double-barreled guns and arranged them, as described, so asto iit in and work within the slotted breech-piece that I have provided, the novelty of my device being in the structure of the breech-piece.
A breech-piece for a single-barreled gun has never heretofore been so contrived as to accommodate a central hammer and top snap, the difficulty being to get the hammer and top snap in line, as they are not in double-barreled guns, and still to provide for the working' of the locking-bolt and other operative parts within the breech-piece.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- The breech-piece A of a single-barreled gun, slotted in two directions, as describedthat is to say, horizontally and verticallythe vertical slot being in the center, whereby the hammer and top snap may be placed in line and still the operating parts accommodated, all as set forth.
