Description

J. W. HART.
STANDARDS 0R SUPPORTS FOR LAS'I'S.
Patented June13, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT rrron.
JOHN W. HART, OF WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STANDARDS OR SUPPORTS FOFi LASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,633, dated June 13, 1876; application filed May 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. HART, of Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Glamp-Foot, especially adapted for machines for trimming heels, of which the following, taken in'connection with the ac" and much difficulty has been experienced in the use of it, owing to the fact that it does not hold the last with sufficient firmness, even when forced upon the last hardv enough to iii- 1 jure it; and the object of my invention is to provide a clampfoot for this and other similar machines which will hold the last very firmly and without injury to it; and my invention consistsin the improved clamp-foot shown in the drawings, in which A is the usual clamp-foot, secured to the rod B by the set-screw O, as usual 5 and O is a pad of leather, or other equivalent tough solid material, capable of yielding slightly under pressure, and yet not injured by pressure. The screw a is secured at its outer end to the pad 0, and by this screw the pad 0 is secured to the foot A. This pad 0 is made, preferably, of two thicknesses of leather, secured together by rivets or stitches, and retaining the screw 0. between them, as shown. The rivets, when rivets are used, should be as short as possible, or otherwise they may be forced into the last, and mar it.
With my improved clamp-foot the work can be done more rapidly and better, and without injuring the last, for in using the common clamp-foot greater care is necessary, and in spite of all care the foot will mar the lasts, and make it unsteady; moreover, by using a pad of the kind described, a much larger surface of the last is in efficient holding-contact with the clamp-foot than when the common.
metal foot is used, especially after the last has become somewhat worn by the common clamp-foot.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- The improved clamp-foot A O for heel-trimming machines, having its parts constructed and arranged together, as specified.
JOHN W. HART.
