This invention relates to improvements in frames and more particularly to glass supporting frames such as door and window saslies and the like.
lt is a matter of common knowledge that as the wood of the frame becomes seasoned and as the putty used to retain the glass in place dries, the adhesive qualities of the putty degenerate and disintegration takes place with the result that the putty falls out and leaves the edge of the glass exposed for the entrance of water, dirt, dust and the like, besides presenting an unsightly appearance.
The primary object of the present invention is to prevent the putty which holds the glass in the frame from falling out, should the same lose its adhesive characteristics and become loosened.
Another object of the ip vention is to reduce the area of the putty exposed to the action of the elements without reducing its area of contact with the frame, thus preserving the adhesive action between the putty and the frame.
A further object of the invention is to guide a putty knife during the application of the putty to the frame and insure a smooth uniform finish to the exposed outer surface thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to support the glass in the center of the opening in the frame. and insure its proper location with relation thereto during the application of the putty.
A feat-ure of the invention is the longitudinelly disposed groove which receives and entraps the putty to effectively prevent its falling away from the frame and glass and presenting an unsightly appearance o Another feature of the invention is the inclined exposed edge of the bead forming the outer wall of the groove which serves as a guide for a putty knife during the application of the putty to the frame to insure a smooth uniform finish to the completed operation and reduce the area of the putty eX- posed to the action of the elements, thereby retarding its disintegration.

The above and other objects may be attained by the use of this invention, one em bodiment of which consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be fully set forth in the following specification, and illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawing in which :-vi Figure 1, is a side view of a window, the frame of which. is constructed in accordance with this invention,

Referring to the drawings in detail, the frame designated genericallyV 10 comprises bars 11 which are attached together at their ends to form a complete structure.
Each frame member 11 is rabbeted to form a stop shoulder 12 against which the inner face of the edge of the transparent panel 13 rests. V Y
A groove 14 is formed in each member 11 between the shoulder 12 and the outer side thereof and the innermost end of this groove `terminates a short distance from the shoulder 12 to form a seat 15 for the marginal edge of the panel 13.
The groove 14 together with the outer side of the member 11 forms a longitudinally eX- tending bead 16, the edge face of which is inclined as at 17 to form a guide against which a putty knife or similar tool is pressed during the application of putty.V 93
As shown in the drawings, the outer edge of the bead 16, that is the edge farthest from the groove 14, lies in a plane with the seat 15 s o as to partially overlie the glass 13. ln- M troduction of `the glass 13 into the frame is QD affected by inserting one edge into the groove and then seating the opposite edge against the shoulder 12, whereupon the glass may be fitted into proper positon. The degree of inclination of the face 17 is such that when the 2 ineens? blade of a putty knife or similar instrument is placed thereagainst, itsinnermost edge,that is, that next to the glass 13, Will lie in a plane with the inner exposed face 18 of the frame member 11. It Will thus be seen that the putty when properly applied will in no Way overlie and restrict the Vision through the glass.
By pressing the putty or other plastic retaining substance into the groove 14 as shown in Figures 2 and 4f, it Will be apparent that it will tightly adhere to the Wall thereof and eectively seal the glass in place to exclude Water, dust and dirt. At the same time the disintegruting effect of the elements on the putty is reduced to a minimum by the reduction of the exposed surface of the putty and even though the putty muy lose its adhesive qualities, accidental dislodgment of the putty Afrom the frame is precluded.
As will. be seen, particularly in Figures 2 and 3, the pane or panel 13 projects beyond the seat 15 into one side of the groove 14. l he periphery oii the panel thus forms a shoulder inside the groove 14; and the putty, or the like, when it is pressed into the groove 14 is forced behind this shoulder and is retained by the shoulder in the groove, and cannot come out.
Vhile in the foregoing, there hes been shown and described one embodiment oi? this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details and construction, combination and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
