This, invention relates to combination penoils and more particularly to devices of this character which embodies in a single, comp actI container a plurality of commonly used implements or devices and has for one of its objects, to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a combination pencil of the aforementioned character havinga chamber embodied therein for the reception of a plurality of implements such as a knife, finger nail file or a pairofscissors.

Another object of the invention is toprovide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a.

combination pencil of the above mentioned character having incorporated therewith a calendar and being further provided with an end cap embodying a cigarette lighting mechanism. 7

Other objects of the invention are to provide a combination pencil of the above mentioned character which will be simple in construction, strong,durable, compact, efficient in its use and which may be manufactured at'low cost; V g

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken inconnection with. the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference desig nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a combination pencil constructed in accordance with this 7 invention.

A writing lead 8 is slidably provisioned in the lower portion of the sleeve 6 and a threaded follower 9 is screwed into the threaded portion of said sleeve and is provided with a detaching lead engaging stem 10, which is adapted to force the lead 8 outwardly upon actuation of the follower 9.

mounted in the chamber 1 in such a manner tl a portion of the periphery of said discs project outwardly through circumferentially spaced openings 16 in the pencil and each of said discs is provided, on one side, with an outwardly extending knurled flange for engagement with the finger of an operator in a manner to rotate the discs for the purpose of changing the indicia which shows through the openings in the pencil. These flanges are designated by the reference character 17.

A reduced externally threaded neck 18 extends upwardly from the calendar containportion of the pencil and has supported in its upper end an eraser 19. A retaining clip 20 is secured 011 the pencil through the medium of an annular ring 21 which encircles the neck 18 below the threaded portion thereof and said annulus 21 is rotatably mounted on said neck. By reason of this construction, the clip 20 performs the dual function of securing the pencil in the pocnet of the owner and in addition may be expeditiously rotated in a manner to engage the door 3 when said door is closed for the pa pose of maintaining the door in its closed position. An internally threaded cap 22 is screwed on the neck 18 and encloses the eraser 19. The cap 22 is provided with a pair of vertically spaced plates 23 and 24 which form a fuel compartment, the purpose of which will be presently set forth. becured to the upper end of the cap 22 is a spring controlled door of dome shape configuration 25 which is secured in its closed position through the medium of a spring latch 26. Mounted on the plate 24 and enclosed in the dome shape cover 25 is a cigarette lighting mechanism comprising the usual abrasive stone and disc and a wick saturated with fuel positioned to The wick extends downwardly into the compartment formed by the plates 23 and 24, which compartment is adapted to contain fuel oil for saturating the wick, in the usual manner.

In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figures 9 and 13 of the drawings, the body portion 1 is of tubular form and has provided therein, adjacent its lower end, an internally threaded sleeve 27 having a bore of uniform diameter throughout. A lead supporting portion 28 fits telescopically into the lower end of the tubular portion 1 and has its upper end in abutting engagement with the sleeve 27. The portion 28 is provided with a centrally disposed longitudinal bore of uniform diameter in the lower end of which is slidably mounted the writing lead 8. A follower 29 is threaded into the bore of the sleeve 27 and is provided with a downwardly extending lead engaging pin 30 which projects into the bore in the portion 28 and engages the lead 8 for the purpose of extending the same through the bore. The follower 29 has a vertical stem 31 extending centrally through the tubular body 1 and the upper end of said stem is disposed in a depending sleeve 32 having spaced flanges 33 on its upper end which embrace a pair of inwardly turned flanges 34 and 35 mounted on the abutting ends of the portion 1 and the upper end portion 36 of the pencil for the purpose of securing the portions 1 and 36 together.

The tubular portion 1 is provided, intermediate its end, with circumferentially spaced longitudinally extending slots 37, the adjacent side wall portions of which are notched or recessed as at 38, (see Figure 13), and pivotally mounted in the tubular portion 1 at the upper end of the slot and extending longitudinally therethrough are suitable tools or implements such as a knife blade 38 and a file 39. The knife 38 or the file 39 may be gripped at the central portion through the medium of the notches or recesses 38 and swung to a horizonal position for use. In all other respects, the form of the invention illus trated inFigur-es 9 and 13 of the drawings is similar to the remaining figures. It is believed that the many advantages of the combination pencil constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is A device of the class described having a tubular body portion constituting a chamber having an opening therein, a closure for said opening hingedly secured to the tubular body portion, and a resilient retaining clip rotatably mounted on the tubular body portion in a manner to be shifted for engagement over the closure for retaining the same in its closed position said clip being further adapted to engage the side portions of the tubular body for detachably retaining the device in a pocket.
