Description

F L. TEMPLE Dec. 16, 1930 BURIAL VAULT Filed Feb. 8, 1930,
I EMpZeI NVENTOR F/ayd A.
ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 16, 1930 PATENT o FIcE FLOYD L. TEMPLE, OF TERRE HAUIEINDIANA BURIAL VAULT 7 Application filed February a, 193d "SeriaI No. 426,934.
My present invention has reference to a burial vault or mausoleum and my primary object is the provision of a burial vault which is constructed of reinforced concrete 6 to include an outer body, an inner body which affords with the outer body a casket receptacle and a cover or lid for the bodies, together with means for automatically cementing the inner body to the outer body when the said inner body is placed in the outer body and for cementing the top or lid to the outer body when the same is arranged thereover to insure the hermetic sealing of the elements constituting the improvement.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompany ng drawings which form part of the applicatlon,
with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended appllcation and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made'therefrom as do not afiect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as ex-' pressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a burlal vault in accordance with this invention, parts being broken away and parts in section.
Figure 2 is a detail transverse sectional View through a sufiicient portlon of the device to illustrate the construction of parts but showing the said parts separated.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but illustrating the parts constituting the improvement connected and sealed together.
My improvement contemplates the employment of a substantially rectangular outer body 1. The body is of reinforced concrete and the open top thereof, on its inner corner,
.50 to the inner wall provided by the recess and to the side. wall which is also provided by the recess.
The inner wall of the body 1, at its juncture with its base or bottom 3 is formed with a 1 continuous substantially rectangular channel inner portion or the wall between the side of the body and the channel 4 is disposed at an inward angle, as indicated by the numeral 6, and from thence the said wall is rounded, as at 7 to'its juncture with the inner sidewall of the body 1. i
The inner body is indicated by the numeral 8, and is also of rectangular formation but the top thereof is arched, as at 9; The open bottom of the inner body 8 has its lower wall from the corner thereof beveled, as at 9, and itsouter face, atthe juncture of the said beveled portion formed with a continuous groove 10. The channel t is designed to have received therein a plastic cement 11. It is, of course, to be understood that the inner body is also of reinforced concrete and the sides thereof are designed to be received in the channel, the inner walls of the said sides being disposed approximately in a line with the vertical wall provided by the channel but the outer wall thereof is spaced from the inner wall of the body 1. i The weight of the body 8, when the same is arranged in the body 1, when the same contacts with the plastic cement will compress said cement, forcing the same into the groove 10 and likewise into the joint between the beveledlower corner 9 and the inner wall of the channel, thereby automatically and hermetically sealing the joint between the bodies 8 and 1. The inner body with the base or bottom 3 of the body l provides a casket chamber and the inner'wall of the base 3 may have'arranged therein transverse strips upon which the casket rests and these strips may be of wood. Also if desired a packing such as ground. cork may be arranged between the sides of the bodies 1 and 8 as well as over the top 9 of the body 8. The cover lid or slab which is also of reinforced concrete is broadly indicated by the numeral 12. The inner corner of the substantially rectangular slab 12 is stepped to pro vide a straight wall or shoulder 13, that is designed to rest on the top of the body 1 and a second horizontal shoulder 14: which is beveled inwardly and which merges into a groove 15. The inner face of the body 1 is concaved, as at 16. The pocket 2 is designed to receive therein a plastic cement 19 and when the lid or slab is received in the body 1 the shoulder 14 will press against this cement to spread the same and cause the cement to enter the groove 15 and the joint between the top of the body 1, the shoulder 13 of the lid and the inner straight wall 18 between the shoulders 18 and 1 1 so that by simply arranging the lid slab in the body 1 these parts are hermetically sealed together.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. A reinforced concrete burial vault comprising a substantially rectangular outer body formed at its inner corner with a continuous inwardly directed pocket which reduces the outer end of the said body, said body having its inner wall at the juncture of the base thereof formed with a continuous channel whose outer Wall is disposed at an angle, an inner substantially rectangular body having a continuous groove adjacent to the outer corner thereof, a plastic cement received in the chain nel designed to be compressed by the weight of the inner body when closed thereon to cause the said cement to enter the groove of the inner body, a sealing slab which is stepped and which has the side wall of its inner stepped portion grooved, the pocket of the outer body designed to receive therein a plastic cement which is contacted by the central shoulder of the stepped portion of the sealing slab and compressed by such contact to force the cement into the groove and into the joint between the outer stepped portion of the slab and the top of the outer body.
2. A reinforced concrete burial vault, comprising an outer substantially rectangular body which has its inner corner formed with a depression, the inner wall of the depression provided with a continuous round pocket for the reception of a plastic cement, said outer body, at the uncture of the base thereof being formed with a continuous channel whose inner wall has its corner beveled and whose outer wall is inclined and merges into a rounded upper portion and said channel designed to receive therein a plastic cement, an inner inverted substantially rectangular body having its outer edge, at its corner beveled and its side at the juncture of the said beveled portion formed with a continuous groove, said inner body designed to be received in the channel of the outer body and to compress the cement to cause the same to enter the groove thereof to hermetically seal the inner and outer bodies, a sealing slab having its inner corner stepped to provide an outer shoulder and a central shoulder, which latter is inclined and merges into a continuous groove FLOYD L.
