TOY
Filed June 1, 1929 1%' 4 f INVENroR /y ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 9, 1930 PATE JOSEPH n. KLINE, or PoRrHURoN, MICHIGAN TOY V.Application filed June l1, 1929. Serial No. $67,712.
The present invention relates to improvements in toys, one object of the same being the provision of a wheeled toy in which the main carrying member is a spring composed of one or more substantially U-shaped members, carries a seat forthe operator, said seat being so mounted as to regulate the throw of the spring by the movement thereof relative to the free end of the spring. y
A furthery object of this invention is the provision of a novel means for attaching the seat to the spring so that readily adjusted at will.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in thel combination and arrangements of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete toy, dotted lines illustrating the foremost position of the seat;
Figure 2 is a top plan view with the head member removed;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the seat and the adjacent portion of the supporting spring; and
Figure l is a cross-section taken on line lL-4 of Figure 3. i
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a substantially U-shaped spring which, although here shown as a single iiat member, may be laminated or partially reinforced by one or more additional members at the arced or segmentalportion thereof.
The axle 6 is flattened between its ends as at 7, and bolts or rivets 8 vextending through said flattened portion and the lower arm of the spring adjacent the rear end of the the free terminal of which adjustably` the same may bel latter secure the spring to the axle. porting wheels 9 are carried bythe axle. opening 10 is spring 5 adjacent the bend of the latter for the reception of the rivet or bolt 11 by means of which the caster frame 12 carrying a caster wheel 13 is swivelled at this point, so that the toy may be pushed or pulled over the surface traversed.
Sup-
The upper arm 14 of the spring, which fr.,
with its is normally substantially parallel lowerI arm, extends beneath and longitudinally of the seat 16 which is formed preferablyof stamped sheet metal and is provided on its under side with a loop through which the upper arm of the spring is slidable.
Such loop is formed preferably by making the seat and depresstransverse incisions in seat between such ining the portion of the cisions below the plane of the under side of the seat. rlhe seat is secured in adjusted po# sition longitudinally of the upper arm of the spring by means of a set screw 20 working in a nut 19 carried by the loop 15 and engaging the spring.
Attaching members 17, extending through the body of the seat forwardly and rearwardly of the loop 15, engage a head-simulating member 18, here shown as a hobbyhorse head, but it may be of any desired design, and which also may constitute a closure over the loop 15.
A piece of hose 21 may be slipped over either end of the spring 5 to cover the arcuate portion of the spring and serveas a bumper.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that by adjusting the seat longitudinally of the upper arm of the spring the movement or throw of the free end of such upper arm may be regulated according to the weight on the seat and that, since the thumb screw 20 is readily accessible, such adjustment can be easily and quickly effected.
provided in the supporting VS D I claim A toy including a Wheel-carried U-shafped flat spring, one arm of which is longer than the other and constitutes the hase, :L stamped metal seat kprovided on its under side intermediate of the ends thereotl with a spring-receiving loop, the shorter umn of the spring being slidable through Said loop and hearing against the under side of the seat, and a thumb binding` screw Carried by the loop and engaging the spring to secure said seat in adjusted position thereon.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. Y
