Application filed May 29,A 1923,' Serial No. 642,287. f Renewedy November 3, 1924.
To all ywhom it may concern.' v 1 l 1 Beit known that I, ARTHUR War. lA'rRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adams, in thecounty' of Berkshireand State of Massachusetts, have invented. cer-` tain .new and useful Improvements m a` Toboggan-Steering Device, ofwhich the following-is a specification. A f
This invention relates to attachments for toboggans'and the primary object-,ofthe 1nventon is to provide a. novel steering attachment which can be readily connected to the ordinary toboggan, without change 1n the construction thereof.
Another prilne object of the invention is the provision of a novel steering attachment for toboggans embodying a pair of independent steering blades arranged at an angle to each other andconnected with the toboggan by resilient supporting members, the blades being adapted to be forced into engagement with the snow, over which the toboggan may be traveling by kflexing the said resilient supporting members.
A further prime object of the invention is the provision of an improved steering device of toboggan embodying a-supporting plate for carrying the novel steering-members which can be readily and quickly secured to the toboggan by the ordinary layman.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a steering device for thetobogga-n of the above character, which will be durable and eflicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market and incorporated with a toboggan at a small cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa toboggan showing the improved steering attachment connected therewith.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a toboggan,
5 is a `detail perspective view of one of the steerngblades.kk
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein Similar' reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates a toboggan and B the improved ksteering at-A tachment therefor'.
,The `toboggan A: is of vthe A usual oranyu preferred character and has been shown only y to Villustrate the use-of theimproved inven- `tion and as illustrated, the toboggan A embodies .the bed 10 reinforced at predetermined points by transversely extending cleats 11, which support the longitudinally extending hand rails 12.
The improved steering attachment B comprises a supporting and attaching base plate 15 of a substantial rectangular configurationv and of such a size as to readily fit between v the two rrearmost cleats 11 and under the hand rails 12. The supporting base plate 15 can be readily slipped in between the body Y or bed 10 and the rails 12 between the cleats 11 without the use of fastening elements.
Secured to the central portion of the plate? v15 is an attaching plate 16 which carries rearwardly extending diverging resilient arms 17 and 18 which are in the nature of leaf springs. When the arms 17 and 18 are viewed in plan they form a substantially V- shaped construction. The outer or rear ends of the arms 17 and 18 have riveted or otherv yextends his armsrearwardly and grasps the handles 22. ,f v v Nowr by forcing down either one of the arms 17 or 18, so as'to force either theblades or rudders k19A or 2O into engagement with the snowv or ice, the direction of the travel of the toboggan A can be readily controlled.
From the foregoing description,y it can be seen that I have provided an improved steering device for toboggans, which can be readily and quickly placed in position on the ordinary toboggan and readily manipulated by one of the passengers on the toboggan.
Changes in details may be made Without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention.
What I claim as new is:
l. A steering device for toboggans including a base plate adapted to be secured on the rear end of the toboggan, a pair of rearwardly diverging arms of resilient material having their forward ends secured to the base plate in adjacent relation, and steering blades secured to the rear ends of the arms so as to be normally yieldingly held in an elevated inoperative position by the latter.
L). A steering device for toboggans includying a base plate adapted to be secured on the rear end vot the toboggan, a )air of rearwardly diverging arms of resi ient material having their forward ends secured to the base plate in adjacent relation, and steering blades secured tothe rearL ends of the arms so as to be normally yieldingly held in an elevated inoperative position by the latter, and handles secured to the rear ends of the arms above the steering blades.
3. The combination with a toboggan comprising a bed, spaced transversely extending cleats carried by the bed and longitudinally extending hand rails connected to the cleats, ot' a steering attachment for the toboggan including a base plate arranged between the rearinost pair of cleats and between the bed and hand rails, means securing said base plate in place, a pair of rearwardly diverging arms of resilient material fixed at their forward ends to the plate in adjacent relation, and steering blades iXed to the rear ends of the arms and normally held in an elevated inoperative position by the latter.
In testimony whereof I atix my signature.
ARTHUR IV. TATRO.
